Background / History

Alexander Pierce promoted Fury to Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., though Fury deliberately maintained a strictly professional distance from his former superior. Early in his tenure, he selected Phil Coulson and Melinda May as agents to cultivate into trusted operatives, assigning them to investigate a New York bank robbery tied to suspected advanced artificial intelligence. As S.H.I.E.L.D. traced Ghost Industries’ technology, Fury sought to understand and potentially adapt its armored-vehicle engine and armor for the Helicarrier project.
