Henry swallowed as he watched the zombie get impaled by the steel spike. Clutching his gun tighter, he asked Abel,

"Buddy, there are more zombies behind that one. Are you really going to fight them with nothing but melee weapons?"

"Huh?"

Abel glanced at Gavin, who was leaning against an armored vehicle and chatting with the others, then at the crew calmly hauling barricades and other defensive equipment into place.

As Abel saw it, the Alliance members had already split into two groups. One kept setting obstacles and traps along the route the zombies would have to take out of town.

The other picked up melee weapons and moved toward the handful of zombies emerging from the forest, each fighter choosing a target.

Even the New York Council soldiers showed no sign of fear.

Looks like the New York Council's people are used to fighting zombies up close too!

Abel grinned, pointed at the zombies still coming out of the trees, and said quietly,

"Henry, guns aren't the only way to deal with the dead, are they?"

"You're right to hold on tight to that gun. But when we run into a few zombies alone in the wild, a melee weapon can actually make us feel a lot safer."

"Don't dismiss that as nonsense. Sure, melee weapons aren't nearly as efficient against zombies as a gun in an experienced shooter's hands."

"But out here, unless we have plenty of teammates around like we do today, a gun's noise worries me far more than a melee weapon. It could bring a whole horde down on me."

"Gunshots carry too far. Even with a suppressor, there's enough noise to draw zombies from two or three hundred meters away and send them all charging at us."

"But knives and hammers—"
