Background

Sasuke initially enters the Chunin Exams driven solely by revenge against his brother, Itachi Uchiha. He rejects praise and encouragement, viewing power only as the means to avenge his clan. His Chidori debut against Gaara is interrupted by Orochimaru's assault on Konoha. 14

After Xuan Ming becomes Konoha's Acting Hokage, Sasuke awakens from his injuries to find Naruto wearing Hokage robes. Having already been overwhelmed by Naruto's battle with Gaara and defeated again by Itachi, he is shaken by the widening gap between himself and his peers. 33

Naruto later confronts Sasuke at the Uchiha Compound and demands that he recruit Jūgo, Karin, and Suigetsu before earning the right to challenge him. Sasuke accepts the task, forming Taka and awakening his Three-Tomoe Sharingan during the journey. 37 58 59

Personality

Sasuke is intensely competitive, insecure about falling behind, and obsessed with becoming strong enough to defeat Itachi. Naruto's rise to Hokage deepens his frustration: he sees Naruto, Gaara, and other contemporaries advancing while he remains trapped by revenge and grief. 33 37

His fixation gradually shifts from hatred of Itachi to a complicated bond with Naruto. He calls Naruto his only remaining bond and challenges him because he believes their conflict can resolve his confusion. 62
