Appearance

Isobu is a colossal, spiked creature resembling a turtle with three enormous tails. Its immense body and chakra make it recognizable as one of the legendary Tailed Beasts 378.

Personality

Isobu is naturally gentle and prefers peaceful survival over involvement in human conflicts. However, years of capture, exploitation, and forced participation in human wars left it deeply distrustful of humans 378 381.

Although generally composed, Isobu becomes highly volatile when it believes humans intend to capture or control it. Its initial attack on Naruto came from the assumption that he wanted to seize it, rather than from simple hostility 381. Isobu is nevertheless capable of reasoned discussion and gradually responds to Naruto’s sincerity, equal treatment, and willingness to respect its freedom 381 383.

Background / History

Isobu had previously spent roughly two or three decades in Kirigakure. After losing the village’s control, it lived independently in the sea and sought only to avoid human affairs 378. Its history with humans made it particularly sensitive to the chakra of Mist ninja and suspicious of anyone approaching it alongside another Tailed Beast.

When Naruto and Mei Terumi independently searched for it, Isobu sensed both parties approaching. Fearing another attempt at capture, it became enraged and released its chakra before Naruto could explain his intentions 378.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Encounter with Naruto

Isobu attacked Naruto as soon as he arrived above its location. Naruto evaded its Tailed Beast Ball and redirected the attack away from the battlefield, but the explosion alerted Mei Terumi and her team to the confrontation 379.

When Isobu continued attacking, Naruto used Shadow Clones and Wind Style techniques to harass it. The attacks failed to cause serious damage, so Isobu answered with massive waves that destroyed the clones. Naruto then closed the distance, seized one of Isobu’s tails, and spun the Tailed Beast through the air using chakra-enhanced strength 380.

The attack calmed Isobu enough for Naruto to begin a conversation. Isobu initially refused to cooperate, believing Naruto intended to capture it. Naruto instead offered a partnership based on a shared future between humans and Tailed Beasts 381.

Contract with Naruto

Naruto’s knowledge of Isobu’s name, his established relationship with Kurama, and his warning about the Ten-Tails’ resurrection gradually weakened Isobu’s distrust. The prospect of the Ten-Tails’ return alarmed Isobu because its resurrection would erase the individual consciousnesses of the Tailed Beasts 382 383.

Kurama confirmed that Naruto’s claims were credible but emphasized that Isobu’s decision had to remain its own. Naruto likewise promised not to force Isobu, calling both Kurama and Isobu his friends 382 383.

Isobu ultimately agreed to a contract with Naruto. The arrangement allowed it to remain an independent companion rather than a conventional captive 383.

Conflict with Kirigakure

Mei Terumi, Chojuro, and Ao arrived after the contract was formed and demanded that Naruto return Isobu to Kirigakure. Naruto rejected the claim that Isobu belonged to the village, arguing that Tailed Beasts were natural beings with their own freedom 383.

Naruto and the Kirigakure team fought briefly. Naruto used Isobu’s chakra to greatly strengthen his Water Style, overwhelming the combined Water Style techniques of Mei, Chojuro, and Ao before retreating with the Flying Thunder God Technique 385.

Alliance with the Snow Ninja Village

Isobu became one of Naruto’s principal Tailed Beast companions. Naruto later revealed its presence alongside Kurama to Utakata, using their partnership as evidence that the Snow Ninja Village could provide safety and cooperation to other Tailed Beasts and Jinchūriki 391 392.

During the meeting with Utakata and Saiken, Isobu greeted Saiken as an old acquaintance and directly supported Naruto’s attempt to persuade Utakata to join the Snow Ninja Village 392.

Transfer to Karin

After Naruto and Isobu had spent additional time adapting their chakra coordination and sealing arrangements, Naruto transferred Isobu into Karin’s body. Because of Karin’s Uzumaki constitution and Isobu’s cooperation, she became a perfect Three-Tails Jinchūriki and could draw on its chakra without immediately requiring a full Tailed Beast transformation 399 440.
