The search for Mystique went very poorly. Several days passed, and Dilos still hadn't found a single suspicious lead.
Dilos knew Magneto's style well enough to be sure he'd have Mystique infiltrate the school as quickly as possible. But for some reason, Mystique seemed to have erased her very presence. No matter how hard Dilos searched, he couldn't find her.
Of course, Dilos had considered using telepathy to check every student's mental activity and find her that way, but doing so risked leaving Charles with a bad impression of him.
Charles was so powerful that he could easily monitor the mental activity of the entire school with his telepathy twenty-four hours a day. Even unfamiliar mental signatures wouldn't escape him; the instant someone entered or left the range of his telepathy, he would know. In those circumstances, even if Charles were asleep, he could wake up in an instant.
Dilos had always wanted to learn this remarkable vigilance technique. But mastering such an advanced form of telepathy—one that could keep watch automatically even while he rested—was no easy feat. Aside from its complexity, it also required a terrifyingly vast reserve of mental energy to sustain.
If even Charles hadn't noticed anyone sneaking in, then there were only two possibilities: either Mystique hadn't infiltrated the school at all, or she had somehow blocked Charles's perception.
Of the two, Dilos personally leaned toward the latter. Magneto's side had formidable technology at its disposal, and Mystique herself had exceptional espionage skills and other advantages. It wasn't impossible that she'd found a way to slip into the school undetected.
As for whether Emma might collude with her former colleague, Dilos didn't think she'd do that, even if she were tempted. Emma was wearing a bracelet designed to release poison. If she betrayed him, Dilos
