After saying goodbye to Chloe, Dilos drove his family's Lamborghini toward the nursing home at top speed.
Vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom!
The engine's roar, usually like thunder, failed to stir his blood as it normally did. Instead, it only fueled the rage burning in his chest.
Though the anger in his heart grew, his thoughts became increasingly clear.
Dilos realized that every unusual event in town was fundamentally linked to Green Kryptonite. If Harry Volk had truly disappeared by the lake as Chloe suspected, and had returned in a youthful state, it was possible that Green Kryptonite existed at the site of his disappearance.
As Dilos pondered the cause and effect, he arrived at his destination without realizing it.
He quickly stepped out of the car. Ignoring the strange looks from the nurses nearby, Dilos walked straight toward the small lake where Harry Volk had vanished.
The area around the lake was filled with lush green trees that offered a sense of tranquility; the air was fresh and the scenery pleasant. A long, winding, sturdy wooden bridge stood over the water, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the view that was enough to soothe any soul.
Indeed, it was a soul-soothing view. Dilos had only heard that human emotions could be altered by the natural environment, but he hadn't expected to experience it himself. The rage in his chest gradually cooled and eventually extinguished under the influence of the breathtaking scenery.
"Of course, it would be even better if there weren't that eyesore of Green Kryptonite at the bottom of the lake and on the submerged rock walls," Dilos muttered, curling his lip. He looked at the kryptonite emitting a faint green glow from the rocks, his expression complex.
"I never thought eternal youth could actually be real..." Dilos rubbed his chin. "How ironic. Something humanity has pursued for countless years has been achieved so easily right here."
Dilos took out the clippings he had gotten from Chloe, which detailed the reason Harry Volk had committed murder all those years ago.
In Dilos's words, it could be summarized in two sentences: Because the teacher who taught Harry Volk piano denied him the opportunity to attend the Metropolis Conservatory of Music, he murdered the teacher's child.
Dilos didn't have much of a reaction to this. To him, the content of the newspaper helped him figure out what Harry Volk wanted to do now that he was young again. Once he understood that, he could set a trap ahead of time and neutralize him!
Dilos took out this morning's paper and compared the information about the unfortunate victim killed by Harry Volk with the details in the clippings.
Dilos noticed the list of names from the jury back then. Although he didn't recognize most of them, he knew a few. One was the father of the victim killed yesterday. Another was Clark's adoptive father, Jonathan Kent's father, Hiram Kent. Finally, there was Pete Ross's grandfather, Wayne Ross.
"I think I know what this guy is up to," Dilos muttered, his face turning grim.
Harry Volk was here for revenge, and his targets were the descendants of the jurors who had sent him to prison! If he remembered correctly, Pete and Clark had visited the nursing home yesterday and had even met Harry Volk at the diner.
Under these circumstances, there was no guarantee that Harry Volk didn't know who they were.
"Damn it! How was a lunatic like this not executed back then?!" Dilos cursed and quickly pulled out his phone to call Pete.
"Pete! Are you there?!" Dilos shouted, but all he heard was the busy signal. This made him frantic. "Just my luck, the line is busy at a time like this!"
Dilos then tried calling the Kents, but without exception, both their phones were busy! As for why he didn't call Clark, first, because of Clark's constitution, he was likely the safest one. Second, because of his family's financial situation, the guy didn't even have a phone!
With things escalating to this point, Dilos felt the situation becoming tricky. He didn't hesitate, rushing out of the nursing home, jumping into his car, and speeding away.
The fastest and most efficient way was to drive to their homes and check if they were safe.
Vroom, vroom, vroom!
The explosive sound of the motor didn't bring Dilos any peace; he only felt that it wasn't fast enough. If only he could go faster.
On the road, Dilos overtook cars like lightning and drifted through corners. His dangerous driving drew angry shouts from nearby drivers, but Dilos didn't care.
Emotionally speaking, while those people weren't as important to him as Chloe or Gabe, he couldn't just stand by and watch them die. The reason was simple: these people had treated him well over the past decade!
Screech!
A harsh sound of tires rubbing against the road echoed as Dilos's Lamborghini left a long trail of skid marks. He pulled the glasses from his collar and put them on, activating the X-ray function. A moment later, he breathed a sigh of relief. Within his X-ray range, aside from the house's structure, there were no living creatures inside.
"Could Pete have an elective course at school today?" Dilos muttered, then looked around the house, his heart tightening.
The phone lines and electrical wiring at Pete's house had been destroyed, and the breaker box had been smashed. Judging by the marks, it was clearly done by someone.
Dilos got out of the car, looking around with a heavy expression, trying to see if there were any tracks left behind. Unfortunately, he lacked the knowledge of tracking to glean any useful information.
He tried calling Pete's phone again, but it was still busy. Dilos gritted his teeth.
Suddenly, a number flashed in his mind. It was the only one he hadn't tried: the Torch Newspaper!
He skillfully pulled out his phone and dialed the number. After a few rings, Dilos finally got through.
"Hello, this is the Torch," Pete's voice came through. Upon hearing him, Dilos shouted.
"Pete, are you okay?!"
"Dilos?" Pete muttered, confused, not understanding why Dilos sounded so tense.
"Yes, it's me," Dilos said quickly. "What's wrong with your phone? Why couldn't I get through? Has anyone strange appeared at school? Like that young blonde stranger you and Chloe met at the diner?"
Dilos fired off several questions, leaving Pete stunned until Dilos shouted at him, prompting him to reply.
"Okay, okay, my phone was accidentally dropped by that stranger I met yesterday. It's malfunctioning and having some technical issues. It's being repaired."
"That guy isn't at school, and I haven't seen him. What's going on?"
Hearing the urgency in Dilos's tone, even the slow-witted Pete realized something critical had happened.
"That guy is a murderer!" Dilos gritted his teeth. "He's hunting down the descendants of the jury that sent Harry Volk to prison decades ago. One of those descendants is you!"
There was no time for explanations, so Dilos continued, "Regardless, don't be alone today. Stay with other people. By the way, where's Clark? Is he there?"
Hearing that he was being hunted, Pete was momentarily terrified. Hearing Dilos's question, he pursed his lips and replied, "He's not here. He should be at the nursing home today."
"Fine." Dilos didn't say anything else, jumped into his car, and sped toward Clark's house. He left Pete with one final instruction: "Stay at school, stay where there are lots of people."
Dilos hung up, his face unreadable. He didn't need to worry about Pete's parents, as their workplace was crowded. As for Pete, he should be fine. The school hallways were always busy, as was the Torch office. As long as he didn't do something stupid like staying in an empty area, Harry Volk wouldn't be able to strike, no matter how arrogant he was.
That left only Clark's house.
Before long, Dilos arrived at Clark's home. As he expected, the power lines and breaker box had been cut. The simple living room was in chaos, and the Kents were nowhere to be found.
"Tsk! Where are they?" Dilos clicked his tongue in annoyance, then used his glasses' X-ray vision to scan the surroundings. Soon, he saw three skeletal images moving inside a barn.
"Found you!"
