"Was this ghost supposed to be delivered by your temple? Where is your temple?"
"This... Benefactor... have mercy—these ghosts have also suffered greatly in the human world."
The old monk wore a sorrowful expression, fingering his prayer beads as he lowered his head and softly proclaimed a Buddhist invocation. Shen Le asked twice more, but the monk kept circling around the question and refused to answer.
When Shen Le pressed him, the monk simply closed his eyes and began muttering scriptures. As for what scripture he was reciting, that was a little beyond Shen Le's knowledge.
"Hey!"
Someone strode over from afar, pointing at Shen Le and speaking loudly.
Shen Le looked up at the sound and saw a man in a yukata. His face was bright red, though Shen Le had no idea whether it was from drinking, being roasted by the fire, or sheer fright.
He was one of the people the old monk had soothed earlier. Short and stocky, he swayed slightly as he walked. He raised a hand at Shen Le, jabbing his finger as he spoke, nearly poking Shen Le in the nose:
"@#$%..."
Shen Le could not understand a single word anyway. He only knew that there was neither "arigatou" nor "sumimasen" in it.
The Special Affairs Bureau guy had been sent back to the consulate, and there was no interpreter beside him. His phone was not set to translation mode either. As for communicating, he could only leave it to fate.
Shen Le turned to look at the old monk. The monk had lowered his eyes and was chanting with his head bowed, as if he neither saw nor heard anything happening before him. Got it—you were staying out of it, right?
