Ch. 461Cloud Kun: Shen Le, keep this up and no one will marry you!
Chapter Summary
- Shen Le learns to control the Growth Spell. After failing to make dried grass grow evenly inside clay, he changes tactics and practices on individual stems before working up to whole bundles. Research results from his junior martial brothers identify the fibers in the sculptures—cotton, ramie, rice straw, jute, and animal hair—and show how different fibers were used in fine and coarse layers. The animal hair turns out to be rat hair, which Shen Le decides to leave alone.
- His first repair attempt reveals a new problem. Shen Le restores the fibers inside the damaged clay sculptures, but the moisture makes them mold and rot. He reasons that the original fibers survived because they were sealed inside the clay, then begins practicing a Water Extraction Spell to remove moisture from fibers and clay without damaging them.
- Cloud Kun returns and fusses over Shen Le. After seeing Shen Le’s dry skin, Cloud Kun anxiously warns him that no one will marry him. Shen Le protests that he is a man, sends Cloud Kun to rest in the pond, and dismisses the teasing as childish—despite Cloud Kun being six centuries old. The other little ones soon join in, and Shen Le reluctantly puts on a face mask.
- Cloud Kun distributes gifts from the sea. Little Puppet receives aged agarwood for a better body; the Little Ink Marker gets manganese nodules, which Shen Le promises to have smelted; and Scroll receives a fine pine-soot inkstick that has been soaked by seawater. Shen Le successfully dries and restores the inkstick with his newly refined water-control skills, impressing Cloud Kun and the others.
- Shen Le’s junior martial brothers help with the restoration. Their analysis provides precise information about the sculptures’ clay composition and fiber ratios, allowing them to prepare matching coarse and fine clay. Shen Le can then focus on repairing the sculptures himself.
- The restoration succeeds. Shen Le cleans the cracks, moistens them, fills them in with successive thin layers of clay, stimulates the fibers to bind the material, and extracts the moisture to prevent rot and shrinkage. He finishes the repairs with fine clay, though he still finds the work difficult and wishes he could control soil directly.
- The chapter ends with a sudden development: as Shen Le wonders whether the Copper Fragment could grant him a soil-control spell, a strange power surges around him.
Character Developments and Relationships
Shen Le is persistent, methodical, and increasingly skilled, turning repeated magical failures into controlled experiments. He also relies on his disciples’ scientific work rather than trying to do every task alone. Cloud Kun’s concern for him comes out as relentless teasing about marriage and his appearance; Shen Le responds with embarrassment and mock authority. The little ones’ affection is clear in their excitement over the gifts and their collective concern about his dry skin. His junior martial brothers are eager to contribute their technical expertise to his project.
Significant Themes
- Practice and precision: Shen Le improves his magic through repeated, carefully measured trials.
- Magic and science working together: Spellcraft enables the repairs, while laboratory analysis guides their materials and methods.
- Care and community: Cloud Kun, the little ones, and the disciples support Shen Le—sometimes through fussing, gifts, or practical help.
- Preservation through understanding: Successful restoration depends on learning how the original materials were made and how they age.
