Background / History
Succession concerns
Xue Ye's surviving princes are Crown Prince Xue Qinghe and Fourth Prince Xue Beng; his daughter, Princess Xue Ke, is described as having no possibility of inheriting the throne. According to Ye Yang's explanation to Serpent Spear Douluo, the mysterious deaths of the Second and Third Princes had previously made Xue Ye suspicious of the Crown Prince. That suspicion had taken years to diminish, making Xue Beng's continued survival important to maintaining the emperor's trust 7.
Unknown to Xue Ye, Qian Renxue has replaced Xue Qinghe, and Ye Yang subsequently occupies her body through an identity swap. The emperor therefore deals with Ye Yang while believing him to be his eldest son and heir 2 12.
Xue Beng's complaint
When Xue Beng accuses the Crown Prince of whipping him, Xue Ye initially condemns the use of private punishment against a royal sibling and demands an explanation. Ye Yang reframes the beating as necessary discipline for Xue Beng's abuse of a palace maid, emphasizing the damage such conduct could do to the imperial family's reputation 12.
Xue Ye accepts this defense despite considering the methods extreme. He praises the Crown Prince for considering the broader interests of the imperial house and confines Xue Beng to his quarters for a month. Ye Yang then requests a three-month salary penalty as a show of self-reflection, further satisfying the emperor 12 13.
Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect murder case
The murder of several direct disciples of the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect provokes Xue Ye's fury. He calls the sect a pillar of the empire and treats the killings near his capital as an affront to imperial authority. A blood-written character apparently implicating the Crown Prince forces him to question his heir, although he initially finds such a reckless crime inconsistent with the Crown Prince's reputation 23.
After Ye Yang argues that the evidence is a deliberate attempt to divide the imperial family and the sect, Xue Ye publicly endorses the frame-up explanation. He gives the Ministry of Justice and City Defense Division three days to identify the culprit, promises Ning Fengzhi a satisfactory explanation, and retains Prince Xue Xing for further discussions 24.
Xue Ye also confines the Crown Prince to the East Palace, presenting the restriction as protection against whoever is targeting him. Morning court attendance remains permitted, but activities outside the palace are suspended. When the initial investigation fails to produce a breakthrough, the emperor orders the Ministry of Justice to achieve one within ten days 24 30.
Tang Yuehua's palace invitation
Xue Ye approves Xue Ke's request to invite Tang Yuehua into the palace to teach etiquette and tea ceremony. His decision combines affection for his daughter with lingering suspicion about the Crown Prince: he hopes the tactful Tang Yuehua can discreetly observe his heir's recent behavior 31.
Personality
Xue Ye places considerable weight on royal decorum and the imperial family's reputation. He rebukes Xue Beng for wailing in court and initially views the Crown Prince's private punishment as disgraceful. His anger subsides when Ye Yang presents the incident as a defense of palace order and dynastic dignity 12.
His treatment of the Crown Prince combines paternal concern with political caution. He has high expectations of his heir and doubts that he would recklessly destabilize the empire, yet he does not entirely dismiss the possibility of wrongdoing. The East Palace confinement protects the Crown Prince while restricting his movements, and Tang Yuehua's invitation provides an opportunity for observation 23 24 31.
Relationships
- Xue Qinghe / Qian Renxue / Ye Yang — Xue Qinghe is his eldest son and designated heir, but Qian Renxue has replaced him and Ye Yang currently occupies her body. Xue Ye's approval of the apparent Crown Prince is repeatedly won through Ye Yang's calculated performances 2 12 13 24.
- Xue Beng — His fourth son. Xue Ye rejects his complaint against the Crown Prince after hearing about his abuse of a maid and orders confinement and reflection 12 18.
- Xue Ke — His favored daughter. Her pleas persuade him to approve Tang Yuehua's stay despite his reservations 30 31.
- Ning Fengzhi — Sect master of an organization Xue Ye regards as essential to the empire. Xue Ye acknowledges responsibility for security in the capital and promises justice for the murdered disciples 23 24.
- Prince Xue Xing — Participates in the emperor's discussions about the murder investigation and later urges more time while renewing suspicion of the Crown Prince. Xue Ye is unaware of Xue Xing's secret Shadow Pavilion token 24 30 33.
- Tang Yuehua — Invited to instruct Xue Ke; Xue Ye also intends her presence to help him assess the Crown Prince's conduct 31.
