Background / History
Nalan Yanran was originally engaged to Xiao Yan through an arrangement made by their grandfathers. Believing Xiao Yan had fallen irreparably behind her after his cultivation regressed to the third stage of Dou Qi, she went to the Xiao Clan to annul the engagement. The dispute resulted in their public Three-Year Agreement, under which Xiao Yan intends to defeat her at the Cloud Mist Sect. 1 6
As Yun Yun's direct disciple and the Cloud Mist Sect's intended future leader, Nalan Yanran had access to the sect's backing and cultivation resources. Her position made Xiao Yan's challenge appear unrealistic to the Xiao Clan and its elders. 1 3 6
After Nalan Jie witnessed Yao Chen's apparent Dou Zong strength, he ordered Nalan Yanran to travel to Wutan City and seek Yao Chen's favor for the Nalan Family. Initially disbelieving that such an expert could be in Wutan City, she nevertheless investigated the matter through Ya Fei. 21 22
Yao Chen refused to meet her, citing both her junior status and the recent broken engagement with Xiao Yan. Nalan Yanran returned to the Cloud Mist Sect and brought Yun Yun to Wutan City, hoping Yao Chen would show greater regard for her teacher and sect. 23 24
Later, she learned that Xiao Yan was Yao Chen's disciple. This revelation left her shocked and worried that the Three-Year Agreement now placed her against the disciple of an overwhelmingly powerful master, though she continued to insist that Xiao Yan could not defeat her. 45 46 48
As reports of Yao Chen's possible Dou Zun strength spread, the Nalan Family sought to repair ties with the Xiao Clan. Nalan Yanran accompanied them but repeatedly refused both to apologize to Xiao Yan and to retract the annulment. 54 55 59 72
Personality
Nalan Yanran is proud, stubborn, and highly protective of her personal autonomy. She considers the engagement invalid because it was arranged without her consent, and she maintains that her marriage cannot be decided by others—even when her refusal threatens the Nalan Family's relationship with Yao Chen. 55 59 72
She initially views Xiao Yan with contempt, repeatedly calling him weak and doubting that Yao Chen would accept him as a disciple. Even after seeing evidence that Xiao Yan is with Yao Chen, she struggles to accept his changed circumstances. 46 48 54
Despite her arrogance, she understands the political value of Yao Chen's support. She agrees to accompany Yun Yun to seek him out and later considers becoming Yao Chen's disciple herself, believing her talent should make her more worthy than Xiao Yan. 46 59
