Rather than be discouraged, he remained composed and pursued independent cultivation, eventually rising to level 10 within three years. To avoid attracting covetous attention, he used his family's limited savings to hire the Bauhinia Squad rather than rely on academy teachers for his first soul-ring hunt 9 13 14.

His lack of resources shaped his early research. After accepting a seventy-year Ghost Tiger ring as the best he could obtain, he resolved to increase its age himself and eventually create Artificial Soul Rings.
