He ignored the fallen phone.
As Luca lifted his head again, he immediately noticed something.
At the otherwise normal intersection, a dump truck that had been driving ahead of their vehicle had suddenly slammed on its brakes for no apparent reason.
If Shamira hadn't maintained a sufficient distance and reacted quickly enough, their car would likely have plowed straight under the rear of that truck.
Even so, their vehicle was forced to a halt in the middle of the road.
However, just because Shamira could react in time didn't mean the vehicles behind them could do the same.
Before Luca could even catch his breath, a deafening "Bang!" echoed out.
Without the slightest surprise, the car behind them slammed directly into their rear.
The immense force of the impact shoved their vehicle forward once more.
A rapid succession of "bangs" followed.
It was impossible to tell how many cars had piled up in the chain reaction.
But by now, the front of the car Luca and Shamira were in was thoroughly wedged beneath the undercarriage of the dump truck ahead.
The windshield shattered into a spiderweb of cracks, and the deploying airbag slammed Shamira's head hard against the seatback.
Yet, Shamira couldn't care about herself.
She pulled out a sharp knife to puncture the airbag while shouting at Luca.
"Young Master! Get out of the car!"
Dazed by the successive impacts, Luca relied on the experience of car accidents from his past and present lives to quickly reach for his seatbelt and unbuckle it.
But then, "Thud!"—another collision.
This time, a car from the side lane had slammed straight into Luca's door.
The force of this impact wasn't massive, but the car had wedged itself perfectly against his door, jamming it shut.
He steadied his body and glanced at the oncoming vehicle.
However, he saw the driver of that car abandon it in a panic without even sparing him a glance.
Luca realized immediately that this accident was no coincidence.
Sure enough, as he turned to crawl toward the other side to exit, he could already see a massive dump truck in the distance, barreling toward them from the other side of the intersection without slowing down.
"Damn it!"
There was no time to think. Even if he crawled to the other side and opened the door, he might not be able to escape the roaring truck.
Looking at the shattered window of the right-side door, Luca's mind turned ice-cold.
He reached for the holster at his waist.
A large, peculiar-looking handgun with a dark green finish was drawn in an instant.
At the same time, he scrambled toward the door using his hands and feet.
The cyan light strip on the pistol flickered, and a series of electronic prompts sounded.
Portable psychological diagnosis, system disconnected, Dominator, startup complete, user confirmed...
"Cut the crap! Activate Decomposer mode!" Luca roared, cutting off the tedious broadcast.
User confirmed, executing mode, Destruction: Decomposer!
Immediately, the dark green pistol in Luca's hand unfolded rapidly.
As if its internal circuitry were exposed, cyan light surged and transformed into rings of glowing bars that wrapped around half of Luca's arm.
The crackling sound of electricity filled the air.
"Shamira! Get out first!"
Hearing Luca's shout and noticing the weapon charging in his hand, she knew the power of that device and didn't hesitate for a second, scrambling out from the driver's seat.
By then, Luca had pushed his door open and stepped one foot onto the ground.
The speeding dump truck was right before his eyes, yet Luca's gaze held only a chilling frost.
"Go to hell! I'm not planning on transmigrating again!"
He raised his arm, the pistol aimed, as the electronic voice continued in his ears.
"Target elimination confirmed, please be advised!"
At this moment, the orb of light gathering at the muzzle had expanded to its limit, and the cyan ribbons of light had fully converged, forming a chilling stream of high-energy particles.
The next instant.
"Hum—"
A cyan-blue beam of high-energy particles erupted, instantly striking the dump truck in front.
The cyan and white light surged violently, transforming into a massive, crackling sphere of energy.
The terrifying high-temperature particles instantly carved a massive, circular hole through the front of the truck.
As the vehicle continued its rapid forward momentum, this cut spread swiftly toward the rear.
In a mere heartbeat, the high-energy particle sphere hovering before Luca had pierced through the entire length of the truck.
The glowing red edges of the severed metal snapped apart, scattering in all directions, carried by the truck's own momentum.
A massive dump truck had been utterly pulverized by this single shot.
Only a few remnants remained in the blind spots of the circular cut.
"Rumble—"
Scattered debris whistled past Luca.
He could even faintly feel the heatwave brushing against his ears, stirred up by the flow of superheated metal.
The vehicles on either side were left battered and broken, struck by the rapidly flying shards of metal.
Yet, Luca, standing at the very center of the "impact," remained completely unscathed.
Every "attack" had been shredded head-on by that single shot.
Stepping out of the car with his other foot, he let the breeze stirred by the heatwave brush against his cheek.
Luca stood steady for a moment.
The Dominator in his hand retracted from its elaborate deployed mode, returning to the shape of a dark green handgun with a slightly peculiar design.
Until now, most of the passersby still hadn't grasped what had happened.
But whether it was the pedestrians on the sidewalk or the drivers who had climbed out of their cars, cursing and ready to find the culprit behind the pile-up, everyone was now staring blankly at the scene Luca had created.
The entire street seemed to fall silent for a second.
Until...
"Oh! My! God!"
"Ahhh!!"
A chorus of shouts and curses erupted.
Well, no one was actually screaming in terror.
After all, the people of New York, having just experienced the Chitauri invasion, had their psychological resilience well-honed by now.
Most people simply stopped in their tracks, pulling out their phones to record video.
As for the one shouting "Ahhh," it was the driver who had just rammed his dump truck toward Luca.
"A student athlete, of all things?"
Perhaps because he had been prepared to jump from the truck at the last second, or perhaps simply due to pure luck.
Even with the entire dump truck torn to pieces, this guy was somehow still alive.
At the moment, with one leg completely disintegrated and gone, he lay on the ground, bruised and battered, struggling and screaming in agony.
Returning the Dominator to the holster at his waist, Luca merely glanced at the crowd taking photos and paid them no further mind.
Shamira, who had stepped out of the car earlier, walked around from the other side.
After kicking the screaming driver unconscious, she walked over to Luca's side and reported in a low voice.
"The drivers of the sand truck in front and the sedan on the side have already vanished. The driver of the rear vehicle was likely involved in a genuine rear-end collision; he is the only survivor left."
Luca nodded faintly upon hearing this.
Confirming that the vehicles behind them posed no risk of smoking or exploding, he leaned back against the car door and instructed Shamira.
"Contact the lawyer. We'll wait here for the police."
