Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Soul Elder — level thirty-something; later specified as level 33 79 108 Has three soul skills and a yellow, yellow, purple Spirit Ring configuration. No ring-acquisition scene or subsequent numerical advancement is documented.

Background / History

Dugu Yan grows up under the protection of her grandfather, Poison Douluo Dugu Bo. By the time he discusses the family with Qin Qi, he describes the Dugu family as consisting only of himself and Yan Yan. Her father’s death and her own suffering weigh heavily on him 67 77.

Like her grandfather, she suffers from toxins inherent to her Martial Soul. During an attack at the hotel where Qin Qi works, she collapses, breaks into a cold sweat, and trembles violently. Qin Qi suppresses the episode by protecting her organs and meridians with his web-like Soul Power, then using Qi Poison to consume the toxins 63.

Qin Qi offers a cure that would require crippling her Martial Soul and living as an ordinary person. Dugu Yan refuses: despite understanding the danger, she will not surrender her strength or the pride she holds as a Title Douluo’s granddaughter 64.

Treatment Options

Method Purpose Limitation or outcome
Cripple her Martial Soul and take medicine Remove the source of the toxins; Qin Qi estimates half a year of recovery Rejected by Dugu Yan 64
Fight poison with poison Suppress painful toxin attacks Qin Qi explains the method, but she lacks his internal perception and protective Soul Power needed to reproduce it safely 64
Medicinal prescription Prevent painful flare-ups temporarily Offered while Dugu Bo develops his Poison Core 69
Poison Seed from Dugu Bo’s refined Poison Core Allow her to cultivate the seed spontaneously, accelerate cultivation, and improve her Martial Soul’s prospects of evolving into the Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor Proposed for later use; implantation and evolution are not documented 69

Appearance

  • Emerald-green hair: Its unusual color results from prolonged erosion by potent toxins, a trait she shares with Dugu Bo 61.
  • Emerald-green eyes: Noted when she approaches Qin Qi at Notting Academy 79.
  • Height: At fourteen, she is only slightly taller than Qin Qi, who is seven years younger 79.
  • Wedding attire: Wears a red wedding gown and bridal veil for their ceremony at the Tang Sect 240.

Personality

Dugu Yan is considerate and generous toward people outside her family. At her first meeting with Qin Qi, she reassures him that her grandfather’s poisonous creatures cannot hurt him and gives him a Gold Soul Coin as compensation for the scare. She also worries about Dugu Bo’s health and confronts him over eating poisonous creatures 61 62.

Her gentleness coexists with pride and a fiery temper. She protests when Qin Qi assigns her the position of disciple rather than deputy sect leader, arguing that her greater age and Soul Power should count for something. Qin Qi comes to regard her as lively and affectionate, but capable of becoming fierce when upset 79 82.

Once committed to Qin Qi, she openly expresses affection and places considerable trust in him. She accepts his pills without asking what they contain, supports his dangerous cultivation attempts despite her fear, and values his love more than the public grandeur of their wedding 82 118 237.

She later becomes dissatisfied with remaining protected by Qin Qi and Dugu Bo without contributing in return. Her insistence on helping investigate Emperor Xue Ye’s poisoning marks a deliberate effort to put what she has learned into practice 180.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphor Snake Martial Soul

  • Possesses three soul skills as a Soul Elder, though their names and individual effects are not supplied 79.
  • Uses a yellow, yellow, purple Spirit Ring configuration at level 33 108.
  • Her Martial Soul’s toxins also harm her own body; ordinary detoxification does not remove their underlying source 63 64 66.
  • Dugu Bo judges that even her three soul skills combined cannot match Qin Qi’s poison at their early meeting 79.

Poison Knowledge and Diagnosis

  • Learns about poison and medicinal interactions through conversations with Qin Qi, including discussions while he prepares medicine 180 181.
  • Recognizes that Emperor Xue Ye’s recurring poisoning requires investigation of its source, not merely repeated detoxification 180.
  • Suggests that apparently harmless medicinal substances remaining in his body combine into a multi-layered Soul Poison 181.
  • Explains that such poisoning requires prolonged accumulation—at least a year, according to what Qin Qi told her 181.
  • Limit: Identifying the likely mechanism does not give her a cure; she explicitly tells Prince Xue Xing that she does not know a treatment prescription 181.

Imperial Administration

  • Helps Qin Qi process accumulated government documents.
  • Keeps him focused when he complains about the workload, reminding him that the matters require attention 241.

Equipment / Items

  • Antidote pill: Gives one to Qin Qi after discovering his involvement in serving Dugu Bo poisonous food 62.
  • Whale Rubber Qi-Replenishing Pills: Receives a bottle refined by Qin Qi to benefit her cultivation. He cautions her to space out doses according to what her body can tolerate 82.
  • Three Spirit Bones: Qin Qi entrusts her with three rare bones, each over ten thousand years old, after the tournament. He permits her to keep or sell them; no absorption is documented 177.

Relationships

  • Dugu Bo — Grandfather and guardian. He indulges her but is fiercely protective of her health and romantic future; she can restrain his temper and repeatedly challenges his decisions 62 65 67.
  • Qin Qi — Initially her poison-treatment provider, then sect leader, romantic partner, and husband. She later shares his administrative responsibilities and becomes pregnant with their first child 63 79 240 241 243.
  • Prince Xue Xing — Requests her help with the royal academy’s tournament team. She accepts partly because he once saved Dugu Bo’s life; he later listens to her analysis of Emperor Xue Ye’s poisoning 160 181.
  • Qin Qi’s mother — Welcomes her as a daughter-in-law and helps direct the couple’s wedding ceremony at the Tang Sect 238 240.

  • Receives the tournament’s three Spirit Bones from Qin Qi 177.

Emperor Xue Ye’s Poisoning

  • Takes part in another wedding ceremony at the Tang Sect, surrounded by Qin Qi’s family and acquaintances 240.
  • Returns to helping with imperial affairs and is later confirmed pregnant with their first child. Dugu Bo responds with protective fussing, nourishing ingredients, and demands that she rest 241 243.
