Zhang Quande was a short, fat middle-aged man with a round, pudgy face and narrowed eyes. He walked up to Xiao Hen and said in a deep voice, "Xiao Hen, you've skipped work for three days straight. You've got some nerve!"
"I had something to take care of these past few days!" Since Xiao Hen had already decided to resign, he would no longer put up with it. For the sake of this job, he had tolerated Zhang Quande's endless harassment before. He had had enough of this stifling life.
"You had something to do? Then why didn't you ask for leave?" Zhang Quande shouted darkly, drawing the attention of everyone in the office.
Xiao Hen frowned. It seemed impossible to resign quietly.
"Heh, something to do? Did someone else in your family die or something?" Zhang Quande sneered maliciously at Xiao Hen.
"Zhang Quande, do you even sound human?" Xiao Hen's gaze turned cold. Half a year ago, Father Xiao had passed away, forcing him to take some time off. The office had happened to be short-staffed then, and when Xiao Hen returned after handling the funeral, Zhang Quande had chewed him out.
"Who cares what I sound like? Three days of absenteeism means half a month's pay deducted!" Zhang Quande slapped the desk and shouted.
"Deduct three days' pay if you want. But if you dare deduct even one extra day's wages, just try it..." Xiao Hen suddenly stepped forward, grabbed Zhang Quande by the collar, spoke in a low voice, then shoved him away.
With Xiao Hen's current strength, that casual shove sent Zhang Quande flying a good distance before he fell to the floor.
"You... you..." Zhang Quande was so furious he could not speak, his face turning red. He could hardly believe that Xiao Hen, who had always endured everything quietly, actually dared to lay hands on him. What shocked him even more was that the thin-looking Xiao Hen possessed such tremendous strength.
Ignoring Zhang Quande, who lay on the floor with a flushed face, Xiao Hen walked to his desk and began packing his things. Everyone was startled. Could it be...?
After packing his belongings, Xiao Hen glanced around and nodded to his colleagues before heading to Human Resources to complete his resignation procedures.
Watching Xiao Hen leave with his belongings, Zhang Quande felt unwilling to let it go. But rubbing his aching chest, he snorted coldly and decided not to confront Xiao Hen head-on. He would find someone else to cause trouble for him later.
"What are you looking at? Don't you all have work to do?" Zhang Quande noticed that everyone in the office was staring at him, making his expression even uglier. His cheeks twitched as he shouted, then returned to his desk, rubbing his painful chest as he walked.
With the wages he was owed in hand, Xiao Hen left Human Resources. Fortunately, the HR staff had not targeted him like Zhang Quande had. They had merely deducted his pay for the three days he had skipped work.
After leaving the company, Xiao Hen rode his old electric scooter through the streets. Looking at the bustling shops on both sides, a thought stirred in his mind. He would soon be heading to another world, so he needed to prepare some necessities. No one knew what the next world would be like. In a world like Resident Evil, a severe lack of food and water could be fatal. If Claire had not rescued him, he might have either been eaten by zombies or starved to death.
"There's a lot to prepare. Food and water are essential, and I'll need wilderness survival gear too—things like a tent, machete, rope, sturdy hiking boots, and weapons. I don't need to deliberately prepare weapons; I still have plenty of firearms brought back from the Resident Evil world. But what if I end up traveling to a supernatural world?"
Xiao Hen frowned as he thought, then parked in front of a supermarket. He turned and entered, beginning a massive shopping trip.
The ten-cubic-meter Storage Space could hold a great many items. It was a three-dimensional space with no gravity and no air. Even perishable items could be preserved in the Storage Space for a long time.
The shopping spree used up all of Xiao Hen's wages, and he even withdrew several thousand more from his bank card. He spent over ten thousand in total before purchasing the vast assortment of supplies.
After arranging for the goods to be delivered, Xiao Hen left the supermarket and rode his old electric scooter home. Nothing happened that night. The next day, Xiao Hen went to a real estate agency to list his home for sale, while also expressing his wish to buy a house in the suburbs.
Houses in the suburbs were generally much cheaper. Once Xiao Hen sold his home in New City Residential Area, he could buy a larger yet cheaper house in the suburbs.
The time until he entered another world again slowly drew closer. Since Xiao Hen had priced his home cheaply, the agency brought several groups of people to view it over the next few days. Although New City Residential Area was old, its location was good and it had the potential for demolition and redevelopment. Several buyers went home to think it over, but one made the decision and bought it on the spot.
Property transactions were not completed that quickly, so Xiao Hen entrusted the agency with handling the procedures. After all, he had paid the agency fee. It was only natural for them to do the work.
Under the power of money, the transfer procedures moved quickly as well. The buyer was not taking out a loan but paying in full, making things even faster.
Once he had the money, Xiao Hen immediately began viewing suburban properties under the agent's guidance. After looking at several, he finally chose a secluded three-bedroom house. Since it was secondhand and the owner had already renovated it, Xiao Hen did not even hire movers. He simply used the Storage Space to move everything from his home over.
By then, nine days had passed amid all the busyness. Today was his final day of free time.
"If I refuse to enter another world, will I still be suddenly dragged into one like before?" Xiao Hen suddenly asked the Shuttle.
"Yes. Before the Shuttle is repaired, the Host's entry into other worlds is mandatory!" the Shuttle's Intelligent Program said. "Once the Shuttle has been repaired, the Host will gain complete control. Please do not slack off, Host, and work hard to repair the Shuttle."
"Understood." Xiao Hen stood on the balcony, looking at the distant scenery and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere that differed from New City Residential Area. He began checking the items in the Storage Space and even took out the firearms to inspect them. These were weapons tied to his survival, so he had to be cautious.
After finishing his inspection, Xiao Hen cooked himself a meal. Then he locked the front door tightly. After all, he would be gone for three days, perhaps even longer. The Shuttle had told him that depending on the mission, the length of time he needed to remain in another world would vary. It would be terrible if he stayed away too long and thieves broke into his home in the Real World.
"Begin the transfer!"
Once everything was ready, Xiao Hen put on a fitted combat uniform, held a submachine gun in his hand, carried two sharp daggers at his thighs, and wore sturdy hiking boots. If he added a steel helmet, he would look like a standard soldier.
"Please confirm. Begin transfer?"
"Confirmed!"
Please vote for me! I'll keep writing tonight, so there should be another chapter!
