Background / History

Bibi Dong rescued Hu Liena and Xie Yue when they were starving beside the road, brought them to Spirit Hall, and raised them. Hu Liena regards her as Spirit Hall’s youngest and most powerful Pope 74.

Qian Xunji raped Bibi Dong, and Qian Renxue was born from that assault. Bibi Dong’s rejection of her daughter extended to wanting to kill her immediately after birth; she subsequently neglected her for years. These circumstances are revealed to Qian Renxue by Lin Fan, rather than by Bibi Dong herself 115.

Bibi Dong also killed Xiao Wu’s mother, Da Wu, to obtain her soul ring and left-arm soul bone. This created a lasting conflict with Xiao Wu that later complicated Bibi Dong’s relationship with Lin Fan 116.

Personality

As Pope, Bibi Dong is proud, intimidating, and fiercely protective of Spirit Hall’s authority. Yue Guan and Gui Mei fear that even displeasing her could be fatal. Nevertheless, her original instructions concerning Lin Fan were to offer recruitment courteously before resorting to force 55.

Her treatment of Hu Liena is markedly gentler. She accepts that her disciple needs setbacks to mature, reassures her after failure, and tells her that defeat does not diminish her pride in her. Her tactical advice is less reliable: she incorrectly identifies Lin Fan’s spiritual power as his weakness 58 59 64.

Bibi Dong’s attachment to Yu Xiaogang leaves her emotionally vulnerable. News of his death provokes a furious attack on Lin Fan; after her defeat and his forced kiss, she attempts to stab herself, but he stops her. Later, she admits that her reluctance to accept Lin Fan is rooted in feeling unworthy of him 101 108.

After accepting the relationship, she becomes affectionate, occasionally jealous, and increasingly willing to make amends. She gives up Da Wu’s ring and bone without hesitation and expresses regret over her treatment of Qian Renxue.
