Charlotte kindled a ball of bloodfire in his palm, illuminating the path ahead.
Saint Michael City had been built by transforming an entire hill. Not only had seven tiers of city been constructed along its slopes, but seven tiers of labyrinthine caverns had also been hollowed out within Mount Saint Michael.
Charlotte had already searched three levels and had now found the entrance to the fourth. The fourth-level labyrinth was blocked by a black stone gate, upon which ancient words had been written: None but Michael's descendants may enter this gate!
Charlotte was certainly not Michael's descendant, but there was no way he would obey those words.
Charlotte gathered his strength and gave the gate a light push. Black flames burst from it, transforming into seven fire serpents that coiled toward him.
Fortunately, Charlotte withdrew his hand quickly, or he would have been burned. He raised his left hand, which wore three Golden Rings. After circling about for a while, the seven fire serpents gradually withdrew into the stone gate. When he pushed the black stone gate again, it opened at once.
Charlotte shrugged and thought, Looks like this world has no genetic testing. As long as you hold a token, you can pass yourself off as Michael's descendant.
Beyond the black stone gate lay an enormous hall filled with coffins. Every coffin rested alone upon a stone platform, with something resembling a gravestone before it, covered in writing.
These coffins were extravagantly crafted, some even inlaid with jewels, like works of art. Yet they still exuded a sinister air that made people deeply uncomfortable.
Charlotte was not especially brave. Seeing so many coffins all at once made his heart pound. He reached back and slapped the stone gate, using the ability of the Palace of Mirrors to create a
