Past the gun racks were displays of cold weapons, mainly canes, rapiers, and daggers. Canes were the most numerous, because they were the only weapons that also served as everyday items and could be openly carried around.
The standard-issue canes distributed by the Imperial military came in roughly five types. The metal battlefield cane was heavy, and when swung, it carried tremendous force—enough to smash a man's skull. It concealed a bayonet for close-quarters combat.
Then there was the red pearwood baton used by law enforcement. This wooden baton was hard but cheap. More importantly, its wood was naturally reddish, and the longer it was handled and polished, the richer its red sheen became. When dozens of red pearwood batons flew about during enforcement, they were extremely eye-catching.
There was also a short wooden cane. It wasn't suitable for combat by itself, but if one gripped the head of the cane, a dagger could be drawn from within. Its official name was a convenient military cane, though it was commonly called a short cane sword.
It was beloved by soldiers and circulated widely in civilian markets as well. It was standard equipment for gangs in many regions. Whenever underground gangs fought, almost everyone wielded this kind of military short cane sword.
The other two types of military canes were relatively crude, mainly issued to engineers and logistics soldiers. There was no stock of them here at all.
Aside from canes, daggers and rapiers were also common weapons.
Imperial rapiers resembled the rapiers of Earth, except their blades were thicker and wider, and somewhat heavier. Their guards were less ornate, and their swordsmanship was similar to Western fencing, though it placed greater emphasis on footwork and faster strikes, with additional slashing techniques. It was a purely lethal art.
From public school onward, schools offered fencing classes, primarily teaching rapier techniques.
Charlotte wasn't a fencing expert. At best, he was experienced. He had no problems with the basics, but as for actual combat—haha, the weather was certainly nice today. His marksmanship, on the other hand, was decent. He wasn't a sharpshooter, but within twenty paces, he could shoot out a candle flame.
He didn't continue looking at the standard-issue weapons and entered the small room at the very back.
The bearded soldier's voice came from behind him. "If you choose one weapon, then for the warden's sake, there won't be any additional requirements. If you choose two weapons, you'll have to sell one, but you can only keep half the proceeds."
"If you choose three weapons, you can keep two."
"Three is the limit."
Charlotte smiled faintly without turning around. "Three!"
There was a deeper meaning behind why Madame Pascal had personally brought him here, then left before he chose his weapons.
This was an unspoken rule.
An unspoken rule belonging to Kilmainham Prison.
Charlotte had no intention of fighting the unspoken rules.
After transmigrating into this world, he only wanted to go with the flow. He had no desire to change it.
"Not bad for a newcomer," the bearded soldier murmured. His footsteps rustled away as he turned and left.
Charlotte pondered for a while, then began examining the small room where confiscated weapons were stored.
Wooden shelves lined all four walls. The wood was of mediocre quality, and there wasn't much on display—only thirty or forty items in total.
Among those few exhibits, there were almost no firearms. Most bore heavy traces of age.
Charlotte's attention was quickly drawn to a small hand axe.
"A Vampiric Weapon!"
Charlotte picked up the hand axe in surprise. He hadn't expected to find such a weapon here.
The hand axe was only half an arm long, even shorter than a short cane sword. Its entire body was dark red, the natural color of Blood Steel, a specialty of the vampires. It was exquisitely forged, with intricate patterns engraved across both the axe blade and handle.
Charlotte had specifically studied related knowledge at university and knew that these were the decorative patterns of the Vanga Family.
Almost all Vampiric Weapons came from vampires. It was said that the Blood Core of a high-ranking vampire at least a baron was needed to forge one of these sinister weapons. They were rare even among vampires, and their owners were usually great vampire nobles. Every Vampiric Weapon was a family heirloom of those inhuman monsters. Even among several hundred ordinary vampire warriors, not one might possess such a weapon.
It could drain an enemy's blood essence and provide its master with an endless stream of strength, granting an enormous advantage in battle.
Among humans, Vampiric Weapons were even rarer.
They were weapons exclusive to vampires. Only in vampire hands could they activate their ability to drain an enemy's blood essence. Holders of other races not only couldn't activate the blood-draining ability, but would even have their life force siphoned away by the Vampiric Weapon instead.
In the Human Empire, Vampiric Weapons were known as cursed weapons that devoured their masters. Aside from a tiny number of collectors, almost no one was interested in such things.
He gripped the small, exquisite hand axe tightly and took a deep breath. A faint prickling pain immediately rose in his palm.
Charlotte Mecklen was also a Transcendent.
He possessed a small amount of supernatural ability.
The strange energy he controlled was called: Bloody Glory!
During his studies at Sheffield University, Charlotte Mecklen had taken an elective on a very ancient and obscure Transcendence secret art.
As Bloody Glory circulated, the hand axe immediately bloomed with an eerie red light.
Since returning from Senis, the Bloody Glory within him had grown every day. It was no longer faint to the point of being almost imperceptible.
Public schools only taught ordinary martial techniques. The National Academy taught Knight Breathing Techniques, guided students in condensing Seeds of Power, and led them to awaken battle aura. Universities went a step further, exposing students to Transcendence knowledge and setting them upon the road in pursuit of truth.
Although not even one or two out of every hundred university graduates could master Supernatural Power, it was still the only divine gift.
Bloody Glory was a Transcendence path developed by humans through studying vampires. Aside from vampires themselves, it was the only power capable of activating Vampiric Weapons.
It was also a combat technique created specifically for hunting vampires. The vast majority of vampires loathed Bloody Glory.
The original Mr. Charlotte Mecklen had chosen it not because he bore any hatred toward vampires, but for one small reason: Bloody Glory was one of the few types of Supernatural Power that could increase one's charm, and it also had a certain effect of extending one's duration.
Mm, that was very Charlotte!
During his four years at university, he had repeatedly failed in his attempts to "awaken Transcendence," which was why he had tried the dangerous act of "summoning an evil god."
He succeeded, completing the Spiritual Awakening ritual and officially becoming a Transcendent.
He also failed, and the evil god took his soul.
Huang Haisheng transmigrated here and inherited everything!
After studying it carefully for quite some time, Charlotte unhesitatingly made this Vampiric Weapon his first choice.
He had never imagined that he could save enough from his salary to buy a Supernatural Weapon, especially a Vampiric Weapon capable of resonating with Bloody Glory. Even if he had ample funds, such a thing would be harder to imagine than winning the lottery. Besides, the newly promoted First-Rank Chief Clerk didn't have much money. Now that he had such an opportunity, how could he possibly let it pass?
After putting away the Vampire Hand Axe, Charlotte made a round of the room and chose two more items.
One was a relatively rare cold weapon—a Multi-Headed Flail.
The other was an old Magic Rapier.
Having chosen his weapons, Charlotte strode proudly out of the armory.
He handed the old Magic Rapier to the bearded soldier. The man accepted it, checked Charlotte's other two items, made a record, and paid him no further attention.
