Burial Ground, afternoon.
Liszt walked among the five enormous Fire Dragon bones, repeatedly casting Magic Eye to observe the magical feedback from them.
There was no sign of magic.
The dragon bone revival mentioned by the Smoke mission showed no indication whatsoever. The five decayed dragon bones remained exactly as they had been.
He dispelled Magic Eye and examined the dragon bones with his naked eye. Judging from Black Horse Island's geography, the Burial Ground lay between Ice Grass Hill and Needlegrass Hill, roughly due east of the island.
"If the Number One dragon bone beside me is the origin of a coordinate system, at (0,0), with due east as the x-axis and due north as the y-axis, each mark representing twenty meters, then Number Two dragon bone is at (-2, 3); Number Three is at (4, 5); Number Four is at (8, 3); and Number Five is at (11, 4). Numbers One and Two are the closest, seventy-two meters apart."
As Liszt inspected the site, he sketched the coordinate system onto Parchment.
The five dragon bones on the coordinate system could roughly be connected into a blade-shaped pentagon. "Could this shape—or rather, this distribution of bones—hold some special significance? Or did the volcano simply erupt and scatter the bones randomly across these five points?"
It seemed they had simply been scattered at random, with no special reason behind it.
He put away the Parchment and climbed atop Number One dragon bone. Its broken end had weathered into a flat cross-section. There had originally been soil on top, with weeds growing from it, but the weeds had long since been cleared away, exposing the fine grain of the dragon bone itself. Ordinary bones were hollow, but Fire Dragon bones were not.
"Or rather, the space where its bone marrow should
