Mitokado Homura entered the village. As he walked down the street, someone finally came to meet him.

But it was not his comrades welcoming him—it was a squad of Anbu clad in gray vests.

Looking around, he saw that the villagers were all watching him with contempt-filled eyes.

Mitokado Homura's heart skipped a beat as a sense of foreboding rose within him.

"What is this about?" Mitokado Homura asked instinctively.

Yamanaka Yuki replied expressionlessly, "You are suspected of abandoning your charge. The Anbu will be launching a special investigation."

Abandoning one's charge was a term from the distant ancient era, originally referring to samurai who abandoned their lord and fled when faced with danger. It was a specialized term of contempt among warrior families. Later, when ninja rose to prominence in the shinobi world, the term continued to be used.

It was the highest-level accusation for a ninja who deliberately abandoned the person under their protection in a crisis, left them to die, and fled without permission.

It was an enormous charge that no one could bear.

Its severity was likely second only to desertion.
