Before an abandoned shrine in the western part of the city, a boy of about ten trembled uncontrollably. His clothes were thin, his face smeared with grime. He was clearly an abandoned orphan.

He had only wanted to hide beneath the shrine for the night and look for food once dawn came.

But he did not know that he had already been marked.

To conceal a family scandal, a merchant had deliberately abandoned the child on this secluded path leading to the temple, thinking, So many people have gone missing lately. No one will investigate if there's one more.

The night wind howled, and the brazier before the shrine had long gone cold.
