Hearing the old man's words, Ian sucked in a sharp breath. One of the great taboos of time travel was bringing back items that did not belong to one's own time! It could trigger unpredictable causal chaos!

As everyone knew, time travel came with many taboos.

First, one could not interfere with or alter known major historical events, or it might cause the timeline to collapse or reality to be rewritten. Second, one could not meet one's past self—when the "self" of the past and future met, it could trigger mental collapse, energy conflicts, or temporal paradoxes.

One could not travel repeatedly to the same point in time, could not save the dead, could not create a time loop, and could not glimpse or alter one's own fate—nor could one bring future technology, weapons, or knowledge back into the past, as that might lead to a technological explosion, imbalance of power, or distortion of history. Likewise, one could not bring things from the past into the future.

These were the taboo laws of time travel, truths recognized by countless alchemists. Yet the old man before him had clearly done more than merely violate several taboos.

He had not merely brought things back.

He had also traveled to the same time repeatedly and crossed paths with his wife in the past. And all of his efforts had ultimately been aimed at accomplishing that eternal taboo.
