Background
The Uchiha are one of Konoha's founding clans and maintain a millennium-old shrine, Naka Shrine, near the village. Their ancestral land formed part of Konoha's foundation, and the shrine is protected by an independent clan barrier. A stone tablet within it records the clan's descent from the Sage of Six Paths and reveals more information to wielders of greater dōryoku 83 279 283.
Despite their status, the clan declines under Konoha's restrictions. Most Uchiha are limited to service in the Military Police Force, while the village's upper ranks restrict their access to outside missions and political influence 2 50. Before Yuzhen's rise, fewer than 100 of the clan's approximately 1,000 ninja had awakened the Sharingan 144.
The clan is divided between Uchiha Fugaku's side and Uchiha Setsuna's larger faction. While Fugaku and his elites are deployed at the front, Setsuna uses his majority within the village to try to force Yuzhen into his camp at a Naka Shrine gathering 54. Yuzhen destroys Setsuna's anti-Flying Thunder God barrier, manifests Susanoo, kills Setsuna, and takes control of his followers 55 56.
Under Yuzhen's leadership and the power of his blessings, the clan's military strength expands sharply. Its enhanced forces later serve as Konoha's principal vanguard during the campaign against Kumogakure and the invasion of Iwagakure 143 148 373.
Organization and Political Position
- Military Police Force — The clan's traditional armed institution and principal source of authority in Konoha. Its control over policing makes other clans and the village leadership wary of Uchiha influence 50.
- Naka Shrine — The clan's ancestral meeting place, located within a five-kilometer exclusive barrier. It houses the Uchiha stone tablet 83.
- Clan leadership — Fugaku remains clan head while Yuzhen builds an independent power base, takes Setsuna's faction, and later directs the clan's political and military course 56 83 328.
- Military Police reforms — After becoming Hokage, Yuzhen keeps Uchiha control over promotion channels while opening lower-ranking positions to Konoha civilians and other ninja clans 328.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
The Sharingan is the clan's defining dōjutsu and central measure of personal standing. Its awakening is associated with intense pain and emotion, while the Mangekyō Sharingan represents a qualitative leap in chakra, perception, genjutsu, and unique ocular techniques 4 83 89.
- Three-Tomoe wielders are regarded as elite combatants; under Yuzhen's blessings, the clan fields 150 of them 145.
- The Sharingan can copy techniques, greatly reducing the difficulty of relearning observed ninjutsu 174.
- Its genjutsu can also be used to transmit information directly into another person's consciousness 278 324.
- Mangekyō Sharingan remain rare even within the clan; Obito, Shisui, and Itachi are the three members stated to have advanced from Three-Tomoe to Mangekyō through Yuzhen's era of blessings 144.
Uchiha Flame Formation
A hereditary barrier technique capable of both containment and counterattack.
- Setsuna modifies one version specifically to counter Flying Thunder God movement, prioritizing durability over its counterattack function 55.
- During the Kumogakure campaign, the clan uses the formation to trap enemy forces within a ten-mile radius 151.
- Yuzhen's Ame-no-Murakumo dōjutsu can break even the strengthened version of the barrier 55.
Human Sage Mode
Yuzhen grants a human-exclusive Sage Mode to selected Uchiha followers.
- It produces no visible bodily transformation or facial markings 133.
- It amplifies the users' existing strength without the ordinary stamina drawback described for other Sage Modes 145.
- Combined with Mangekyō Sharingan, it raises Obito and Shisui to the threshold of Super Kage-level power 145.
- The ability to grant Sage Mode and stimulate Sharingan development is regarded within the clan as miraculous 146.
Combined Fire Style and Susanoo
The empowered clan can coordinate large-scale techniques beyond ordinary Uchiha deployments.
- A combined Sage Art: Great Fireball Technique overwhelms Iwagakure's joint Earth Style: Earth Flow Wave 373.
- Four Susanoo giants, each hundreds of meters tall, break Iwagakure's forces and force Ōnoki's surrender 374.
Relationships
- Konohagakure — Founding clan and long-time Military Police authority; historically distrusted and restricted by the village, but elevated after Yuzhen becomes Hokage 2 50 328.
- Uchiha Yuzhen — The clan's foremost benefactor and political leader; he subdues Setsuna's faction, empowers hundreds of members, leads its armies, and becomes its first Hokage 56 144 328.
- Uchiha Fugaku — Clan head who initially supports Yuzhen's rise and later submits to his direction on Military Police reform 2 19 328.
- Uchiha Setsuna — Former internal rival whose faction dominates the village-side clan until Yuzhen kills him and assumes control of his followers 54 56.
- Senju Clan — Ancient rival clan. The Uchiha regard Wood Release as the power that historically defeated their Sharingan and secured the Senju's victory over them 93.
- Iwagakure — Resists the Uchiha invasion but is routed by the clan's Sage Arts and multiple Susanoo 372 374.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Internal faction struggle
The Uchiha's internal divide becomes central when Setsuna attempts to recruit or eliminate Yuzhen at the Naka Shrine. Yuzhen's victory destroys Setsuna's political base and changes the clan's balance of power 54 55 56.
Rise of the blessed Uchiha
Yuzhen turns the clan into his core support base by granting followers stronger Sharingan and Human Sage Mode. The resulting force contains hundreds of enhanced ninja and several Mangekyō users 143 144 145.
Kumogakure campaign
The clan serves as Konoha's vanguard in the Land of Hot Water. It destroys a Kumogakure camp, predicts the enemy's route, and seals a large force with the Uchiha Flame Formation 148 151.
Conquest of Iwagakure
Led by Itachi, Shisui, Obito, and Fugaku, the Uchiha defeat Iwagakure with restrained but overwhelming force. Their combined Sage Art and four Susanoo compel Ōnoki to surrender 373 374.
The first Uchiha Hokage
Yuzhen's accession ends the clan's long-standing grievance that the Senju produced Hokage while the Uchiha did not. The clan celebrates his elevation and begins implementing reforms intended to preserve Uchiha influence while opening the Military Police Force to wider participation 328 329.
Trivia
- The Uchiha are described as a pragmatic clan that reveres strength; Uchiha Madara received no clan support when he sought to leave Konoha because the clan believed Senju Hashirama and Wood Release were stronger 93.
- Before Yuzhen's rise, the clan's population is stated to be about 2,000, with roughly 1,000 ninja 144.
- The clan's military prestige becomes so great that Iwagakure views multiple Susanoo as a threat that conventional numerical superiority cannot reliably overcome 372.
