Chapter 392: Continue Digging Pits
At Schönbrunn Palace, Franz had been in such high spirits lately that everyone looked pleasing to his eye. The American Civil War had settled into the dust, which meant Austria would not have to worry about a threat from the United States for the next fifty years.
That was more than enough time for him to develop the African Continent. Though its natural conditions could not compare to the land blessed by Heaven, it still possessed the foundations of a great power.
Compared with this long-term plan, European strategy had instead become secondary. Franz did not believe he possessed a protagonist's halo that would let him unify the European Continent and rebuild the Roman Empire.
The Holy Roman Empire and the Roman Empire seemed to differ by only two words, but in reality, they were worlds apart.
Ever since Napoleon the Great's defeat, the nations of Europe had abandoned any thought of unifying the European Continent. Not even the stubbornly headstrong Tsarist Government dared entertain such ambitions.
Even if he could unify Europe, Franz would not do it. It was a bottomless pit, enough to bury any empire. He could not dig a pit and bury himself in it just for the fleeting thrill of showing off.
Africa was not the best choice, but it was the choice best suited to Austria. If possible, Franz would not mind locking horns with South America to the bitter end.
The reason was simple: South America possessed an excellent natural environment, abundant resources, low development difficulty, no great powers, vast land, and sparse population.
Across 17.84 million square kilometers of land, there were only a little over twenty million people, most of them Indians.
If Spain could revive, then South America would be their land bestowed by Heaven.
