The staff had already been a motley mix, and in pursuit of corporate profits, Rivera had instituted strict performance evaluations: the capable rose, while the mediocre fell.
It seemed there was nothing wrong with that, but it overlooked the peculiar nature of the profession. Talking investors into pulling money from their pockets was practically a position tailor-made for con artists.
No matter how eloquent ordinary people were, they still needed time to adapt. When it came to sweet-talking investors, they were clearly no match for professional con artists.
So it was hardly surprising that people absconded with the funds. After all, con artists climbed the ranks faster and could easily worm their way into management, be entrusted with important responsibilities, and sent out to raise capital.
Rivera's grand promises could only bind con artists with ambition. Yet not every con artist harbored lofty ideals; many simply wanted to make one big score and leave.
Fortunately, Rivera was highly skilled at sweet-talking people. No, that was called "personal charisma."
Relying on
