Ch. 3021A Siege Designed to Kill, a Battle on the Walls
Key events
- Fang Dongbai and the others arrive at Fortress No. 7, a vast military stronghold on the True Realm’s border. They are issued identity tokens containing a small supply of True Coins and assigned to serve in an auxiliary legion.
- Their terms require them to earn merit through combat and serve for ten thousand years before becoming free citizens. Li Qing suspects the arrangement is designed to keep them confined and monitored—and to let many die before their service ends. He begins looking for a way around the surveillance system so he can transfer the puppets’ Control Cores.
- After only three days, the recruits are sent to the walls. A vast Disaster army, led by a True Spirit expert, attacks the fortress. Its storm of dark power clashes with the fortress’s True Spirit defense, creating an expanding zone of intertwined dark-red and dark-gold energy.
- Within that zone, fighters lose about seventy percent of their strength. The attackers charge the walls, while the defenders—directed by a commander—rain destructive attacks on them. The attackers use their own power to walk up the sheer walls, turning the battle into close combat.
Character developments and interactions
- Li Qing recognizes the Sourceflows’ distrust and sees the service system as a means of control. He watches events through the Control Core while searching for a weakness in the fortress’s monitoring.
- Fang Dongbai experiences the scale of the battle firsthand. Feeling powerless under the True Spirits’ pressure, he realizes this is not a conventional war and that ordinary assumptions about combat do not apply.
- The defenders act under a commander’s shared mental orders. Fang Dongbai’s armor can transform into different weapons and channel the destructive power of the Gods and Devils Sourceflow, giving him a way to fight despite the suppression.
Significant themes
- Control and distrust: The service contract offers eventual freedom but confines recruits to the battlefield and keeps them under scrutiny.
- The gulf in power: The clash between True Spirits makes even experienced fighters feel insignificant.
- Adaptation in war: Success depends on understanding the battlefield’s altered rules and making effective use of available abilities.
