"Hokage-sama, should my joining the Anbu be kept highly confidential?"
The identities of Anbu members were classified information, known only to the Hokage. Logically, Shōji's question was almost pointless. But the secrecy he meant clearly concerned the upper ranks of the Uchiha Clan, and he believed Sarutobi Hiruzen understood the meaning behind his question.
This was also a different kind of test Shōji was putting Sarutobi Hiruzen through!
"Naturally, it must remain highly confidential to outsiders. That is the village's rule. But an occasional exception can be made. You understand that, Shōji-kun. This is also a good opportunity to see certain people's attitudes more clearly, isn't it?"
Sarutobi Hiruzen narrowed his eyes slightly as he spoke, a faint chill glinting in his pupils.
"Yes, Hokage-sama!"
Shōji lowered his head and answered.
"Mm. Go on, then."
With that, Sarutobi Hiruzen waved a hand, signaling for Shōji to leave.
Some things only needed to be said indirectly. Sarutobi Hiruzen believed that, with Shōji's intelligence, he would certainly understand his meaning. Not spelling it out also left a certain amount of room to maneuver. It would provide more space for some future arrangements, while also serving as a special test for Shōji.
At the end of the day, Sarutobi Hiruzen could not trust Shōji completely.
He could only be said to hold special expectations for Shōji, hoping that in some future moment, Shōji would demonstrate the same breadth of character and resolve Kagami Uchiha had once possessed.
