Baishi leaned back in the spacious leather Hokage's chair. The Gyokuro tea on the desk had gone completely cold, its bitter taste overpowering the lingering sweetness. Mikoto Uchiha's fingertips rested against his temple. Her breathing hitched slightly as she sensed the man's muscles tense in an instant.
"Hokage-sama! The northern defense line... there's an absolute blind spot!"
Hiashi's distorted roar surged into Baishi's mind along the Chakra silver thread.

Mikoto immediately withdrew her hand and lowered her head as she stepped toward the tea table.
Baishi focused his mental power on the Chakra threads, completely locking his perspective onto the front line in the Forest of Death. He wanted to see exactly what Orochimaru's vaunted invisible killer could do.

The temperature had dropped to freezing. The white vapor from Hiashi's breath had frozen into ice crystals on his beard. Blood still flowed from the wound through his right shoulder, but he had no time to care about the pain.
"Third Patrol Squad! Report your position!" Hiashi growled into the radio.
Only the crackle of static answered him.
