Hyuga Hiashi held the Scroll in both hands.
The Scroll itself was black, its material unknown, but the crimson wax seal at its closure looked like a drop of congealed blood.
At the center of the blood was stamped a waning moon emblem.
Namikaze Minato had seen that emblem in the top-secret files at the ANBU Former Site. It represented the supreme will of Baishi, the Fifth Hokage—beyond question and beyond defiance.
Hyuga Hiashi's voice was as still as the sea of sand behind him.
"There is only one order."
His tone was flat, as though he were not delivering a military order that could determine the lives and deaths of hundreds, but reading out an inventory list of logistical supplies.
Minato did not reach out to take it.
His gaze remained fixed on the waning moon seal, as if he wanted to see through it.
"Our Exploration Team—more than a dozen Konoha comrades—are about to be slaughtered." Minato kept his voice low, every word seeming to squeeze out through clenched teeth. "And you're talking to me about orders?"
"I am only responsible for delivering and carrying them out." Hyuga Hiashi's posture did not change. His hands holding the Scroll were steady as stone. "Commander-in-Chief, please inspect the order."
Minato drew a deep breath. The air was thick with the dry, gritty scent of sand and dust.
He snatched the Scroll away and violently tore open the wax seal.
The Scroll unfurled. There were not many words on it, but each had been written in an overwhelmingly forceful hand, its sharpness laid bare.
