Ch. 21The Cost of a Collarbone Piercing and a Brutal All-or-Nothing Counterkill
Chapter Summary
Key Plot Points and Events
- During a midair battle, Baishi is stabbed beneath the collarbone by an Iwagakure Jonin’s poisoned Kunai. Rather than retreat, he deliberately drives himself farther onto the blade, trapping the Jonin’s arm against his body.
- Using the immobilization, Baishi locks the Jonin’s wrist and unleashes the last of his Lightning Release chakra. He forms a Lightning Blade and stabs directly into the Jonin’s heart, killing him instantly.
- The entangled fighters crash into the Underworld Swamp. Baishi survives, but the poison rapidly spreads, paralyzing the left side of his body and causing him to cough dark blood.
- With only seven percent of his chakra remaining, Baishi refuses to remove the Kunai because doing so would cause fatal bleeding and accelerate the poison. Instead, he uses Lightning Release to burn and seal the surrounding tissue, temporarily slowing the venom.
- All eight Iwagakure combatants are dead. However, Baishi remains alert, anticipating another threat.
- Konoha ANBU captain “Venom Fang” emerges from the smoke. He reveals that Baishi had been used as expendable bait to delay the Iwagakure squad, after which Venom Fang intended to kill him and disguise his death as a battlefield casualty or defection.
- Venom Fang claims that Danzo ordered Baishi’s elimination, with Namikaze Minato’s tacit approval, because Baishi is an unsupported “nobody.”
- As Venom Fang prepares to execute the wounded Baishi, Baishi reveals that he has prepared a countertrap: a steel wire connected to three miniature Explosive Tags hidden beneath the swamp mud. The chapter ends as the traps activate beneath Venom Fang.
Character Developments
- Baishi: Demonstrates extraordinary tactical intelligence, pain tolerance, and ruthlessness. He turns his own injury into a weapon, sacrifices his remaining chakra and bodily health to kill the Jonin, and continues planning even while poisoned and near death. His apparent helplessness is revealed to be another calculated deception.
- Iwagakure Jonin: Initially confident in his superior strength and poison weapon, he becomes horrified when Baishi intentionally accepts the stab and traps him. His arrogance turns into panic before Baishi kills him.
- Venom Fang: Revealed as a cold, manipulative superior who views Baishi as disposable bait rather than a comrade. His confidence comes from believing Baishi is too injured to resist, but he underestimates Baishi’s preparation.
- Danzo and Minato: Though they do not appear directly, they are implicated in the conspiracy against Baishi, emphasizing his political isolation within Konoha.
Significant Themes
- Survival through calculated self-sacrifice: Baishi survives by treating his body as a tool, accepting devastating injuries to create openings.
- The cost of power: His victory leaves him poisoned, nearly drained of chakra, and severely wounded, showing that triumph comes at an extreme physical price.
- Betrayal and expendability: The chapter exposes the ruthless treatment of low-ranking operatives as disposable assets in covert warfare.
- Deception and hidden strength: Baishi repeatedly conceals his true intentions, appearing doomed while carefully preparing a counterattack.
- Individual will against political power: Despite lacking status or protection, Baishi refuses to accept the fate imposed on him by stronger institutions and higher-ranking figures.
Character Interactions
- Baishi and the Iwagakure Jonin engage in a brutal close-quarters struggle in which Baishi’s willingness to endure pain defeats the Jonin’s physical advantage.
- Venom Fang confronts Baishi after the battle, taunting him and openly explaining the betrayal behind his mission.
- Baishi remains silent and seemingly defeated during Venom Fang’s approach, then reverses the power dynamic by revealing the explosive trap beneath the ANBU captain.
