After flying for a while, Hahaha Hades lowered his altitude. After aimlessly searching for something to interact with, he finally spotted a location with a light on. Although the light was dim, in his understanding, light in the middle of the night was something only intelligent beings could create.
He began to descend slowly. As he dropped, the cold wind whistled through his body. While it wasn't enough to make him seek out a warm place to stay, he couldn't help but wonder: could a nano-virtual device really simulate such realistic sensations?
Hades couldn't help but ponder this question. Although his equipment had a "true-to-life" experience function for medical purposes, that feature was throttled to seventy percent less than reality, retaining only thirty percent of the actual sensation. Furthermore, for safety reasons, only a handful of authorized software programs were permitted to unlock such features.
So, was this feeling of absolute reality due to a device malfunction? But could that thirty-percent-capacity function really simulate things this realistically?
For some reason, a bold guess suddenly popped into Hades's mind: what if he were actually in the real world right now?
At this thought, Hades shivered for no reason. Perhaps his guess was true—perhaps he had become his YGGDRASIL character and arrived in the real world.
But in an instant, he dismissed the idea. After all, humans in the real world couldn't fly without the aid of flight gear.
Moreover, the real world didn't have scenery like this. As far as ecological cities went, the natural landscape within his sight was far too complex; not only were there endless grasslands, but there were also forests and mountain ranges. Even the most top-tier ecological cities couldn't achieve such a scale.
As for the areas outside the ecological cities, if there were still unpolluted and undamaged natural landscapes out there, the government wouldn't need to expend such massive amounts of energy and wealth to build those cities in the first place.
At the beginning of the 22nd century, the environment had been severely devastated, the agricultural industry had collapsed, and the sky was often shrouded in black fog, making it nearly impossible to see the sun. Because the streets were surrounded by thick, toxic smog, one couldn't go outside without wearing a gas mask.
Of course, this had nothing to do with Hades. He had lived in an ecological city since he could remember. Although he couldn't go wherever he pleased and often couldn't see his parents, he at least lived in affluence and could get whatever he wanted. The only thing that displeased him was the constant stream of people trying to make him study those dull, tedious courses.
Having lived in the ecological city for over twenty years, he had grown accustomed to being confined there, and his life had long since lost its passion. If he could, he would rather leave the city and head for that vast sky outside. Even if he had to wear a gas mask, he wanted to see what the wide world looked like; perhaps there were still unpolluted environments left on Earth.
If this were the real world, Hades felt it wouldn't be so bad, but he worried that in the end, he was just a beta tester for the second installment of YGGDRASIL.
Such things were not without precedent. A well-known game operator had once done exactly that. Although it eventually led to a lawsuit and caused the government to place restrictions on the Nano-Virtual Device Act, it had still achieved a certain level of promotional effect.
Hades didn't know which was real—the actual world or the virtual one. As these thoughts collided violently in his mind, he reached the ground. The feeling of his feet touching solid earth and the sensation of his soles bearing his body weight caused his inner conviction to shift a notch toward the real world.
On the plains in front of him, houses built of thatch and wood were scattered about. The light was emanating from one of these houses.
"Is this a village?" Hades muttered to himself. He walked toward the house with the light.
Upon reaching the entrance, Hades faintly heard muffled sounds coming from the other side of the wooden door. He couldn't identify the language; it didn't feel like his daily tongue, yet he had a feeling that if he could hear the content clearly, he would be able to understand the meaning.
Raising his hand, Hades knocked on the wooden door twice. The dull sound felt like a funeral bell tolling toward death. The voices on the other side of the door fell silent instantly, and the entire village seemed to sink into stillness along with the sound of his knocking.
Hades felt himself growing tense involuntarily. Because he couldn't determine whether he was in the real world or a virtual one, he feared that if the door opened, some unspeakable monster might appear.
He regretted making such a rash decision; he should have at least eavesdropped on what they were saying first. But as the "thump-thump" of footsteps sounded from behind the door, Hades had no choice but to bite the bullet and stand at the entrance, assuming a defensive stance.
At the same time, he subconsciously tried to pull up his panel to check his character stats, only to remember that the YGGDRASIL operation panel had vanished.
However, to Hades's surprise, a string of information was suddenly shoved deep into his consciousness, directly into his brain. That information was precisely the character stats he had wanted to pull up.
Character Name: Hahaha Hades Race: Human Gender: Male Karma: 200 Alignment: Good Class Role: Warrior (Monk/Combat Specialist) Classes: Monk 10, Inner-Qi Monk 10, Outer-Qi Monk 10, Qigong Master 10, Dragon-Breath Walker 5, Eternal Departed 5, Duelist 10, Duel Master 10, Peak Martial Artist 10, Champion 10, Invincible 5, Perfection 5.
Hades's mind was a bit dazed, but he couldn't afford to dwell on it now. With a "creak," the wooden door swung open.
Hades's muscles tensed, and cold sweat slid down his forehead. The stone in his heart finally dropped—behind the opened door was not some unspeakable, strange creature, but a human: a man with graying hair.
The man had a mixed appearance of Asian and European descent. The weariness on his face showed that he was no longer young, and his rough hands, covered in thick calluses, were something Hades had never seen before.
Although a fellow human male stood before him, it would have been much better if the man weren't holding a steel pitchfork pointed directly at him.
"Who are you?" Emmet gripped the pitchfork tightly with both hands, staring at the handsome youth outside the door who looked like a gust of wind could blow him over.
In this village far from the city, strangers almost never visited. The men, women, old, and young in the village all knew each other. After nightfall, villagers would return to their respective homes to rest. Even if someone needed to knock on another's door for a matter, they would identify themselves while knocking, and the voice was the best way to verify identity.
This was an unwritten rule in the village. Therefore, if a knock occurred at this hour and the person knocking didn't identify themselves, there might be trouble. No matter who the person was, picking up the pitchfork was a necessary precaution.
Because inside the house behind Emmet were his wife and two daughters. If the stranger were a thief, he could at least strike first, and the sounds of a struggle would alert the others in the village.
