Zhuang Hong bought a great many candies and books and came to Rainbow Home.
It was the orphanage where he had grown up.
Zhuang Hong had never seen his parents. Ever since he could remember, he had sat in Rainbow Home's yard, looking at the grass and trees within.
He remembered that long, long ago, the osmanthus tree in the yard had only been a little taller than him, and Dean Nong Shanying's face had not yet borne so many wrinkles.
Now, the osmanthus tree in the yard had grown very tall, and Dean Nong's face was covered in wrinkles. Her smile had become kinder and more benevolent, but the light in her eyes was gone forever.
Zhuang Hong knew that Dean Nong's dream of "letting no one be abandoned" had slowly shattered as time flowed on.
Zhuang Hong's arrival sent the whole of Rainbow Home into lively cheers, naturally accompanied by Dean Nong's loud scolding.
A long-haired girl wearing an apron stood to one side with a bucket in hand, watching Zhuang Hong with a smile on her face.
The girl was named Hua Wanying. Her skin was fair and her features sweet, but her hands were exceedingly rough from years of labor.
Hua Wanying had grown up in the orphanage. Because of her sweet looks, many families had wanted to adopt her, but she had refused them all. For all these years, she had remained at Rainbow Home to help out, sharing much of Dean Nong's burden.
She and Zhuang Hong had been close companions since childhood.
After handing out the candies, Zhuang Hong found a place to sit.
"Here, for you."
Hua Wanying handed him a peeled apple from beside him.
Zhuang Hong accepted it and took a bite. "Thanks."
Zhuang Hong suddenly turned to Hua Wanying and asked, "I saw Dean Nong looking a little anxious just now. Is Rainbow Home short of money lately?"
Hua Wanying nodded. "Xiao Nan was hospitalized..."
Zhuang Hong said, "Tell Dean Nong not to worry too much. In a few days, I'll give her some money. It won't be much, but there should be at least a hundred thousand or so!"
Ever since gaining the ability to travel through space, Zhuang Hong had occasionally done business across time and space, earning quite a bit of money.
After covering his own expenses, he donated most of what he earned to Rainbow Home.
Of course, to avoid uncontrollable trouble, Zhuang Hong had been very restrained in his time-and-space business. He had not amassed wealth without restraint, usually stopping while he was ahead.
So he had money, but not a great deal of it.
Hua Wanying was very curious where Zhuang Hong earned so much money, but she did not ask.
After staying for a while, Zhuang Hong left Rainbow Home. He let out a long breath and quietly departed.
Whether he owed Rainbow Home anything or not was hard to say. He only hoped that this place, which could offer a sliver of hope to those who had been abandoned, would continue to exist forever.
The next day, Xu Kaidong's materials had finished downloading.
Zhuang Hong packed his things, slung on his backpack, and stepped forward, crossing the Space Barrier toward Xu Kaidong's world.
Just over a day later, he met Xu Kaidong.
When Zhuang Hong woke Xu Kaidong in the dead of night, Xu Kaidong was not angry at all. Instead, he shoved the Twenty-Eighth Concubine aside, scrambled up, and quickly dressed.
With trembling hands, he pressed the computer's power button.
When the screen lit up, he nearly fainted from happiness. All sorts of ways to play with computers instantly awakened from their slumber.
Then, beaming from ear to ear, he presented two hundred taels of gold. "Mister Zhuang, did you download any offline games for me?"
"You never said you wanted offline games. But Minesweeper and Solitaire should be there."
Having a computer but no games slowly twisted Xu Kaidong's face into a grimace. "Mister Zhuang... will there be another time? I still have quite a bit of money. As long as you help me get some offline games, I'll pay one hundred taels of gold for every game."
Did Zhuang Hong lack money?
No.
If he did not lack money, why would he keep helping this insincere fellow?
He waved a hand. "We'll talk later. I don't need money for the time being."
As he spoke, his figure gradually disappeared.
"Hey, hey, hey!"
Xu Kaidong's outstretched hand froze in midair. Then he lightly slapped himself across the face. "You trash memory—why didn't you think of asking Mister Zhuang to download games before?"
Not long after, the Twenty-Eighth Concubine knocked on the door. "Husband, are you asleep?"
Xu Kaidong said, "Go, go, go. Sleep in your own room. I have important business to attend to."
Then he began playing Minesweeper with great relish.
"This is fucking fun."
Two more days passed, and Zhuang Hong returned to Ji Ling Star with two dark circles beneath his eyes.
When he neatly laid two bags of gold bars before Wu Miaomiao, her round eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets.
"Zhuang Hong, where did you get so much gold? Don't tell me you robbed a bank vault!"
Zhuang Hong waved a hand. "I don't do illegal or criminal things. Don't worry, the gold bars came from legitimate sources. There won't be any problems."
"What if the truth comes out one day? Don't worry, Zhuang Hong, I definitely won't betray you."
Zhuang Hong: "..."
Wu Miaomiao gathered the gold into her arms, her face intoxicated. "Selling all of this would bring back nearly fifty million Ji Ling Coins. I couldn't earn that much even if I worked my whole life. We're rich, we're rich!"
Zhuang Hong said, "Miaomiao, wake up. This is treatment money, and we can't exchange it all. I still have uses for the rest."
Wu Miaomiao rolled her eyes. "Leave me alone. Let me have this daydream first."
Zhuang Hong said, "If there's a lot left over, I can give you one."
Wu Miaomiao froze, then shot to her feet in delight. "Really?"
Then she leaped onto the table and danced wildly. "Wahahaha! Isn't that a bit improper, Zhuang Hong? Wahahaha! I'm so embarrassed, wahahaha..."
This woman was probably insane.
But that was understandable. After all, it was gold.
Over the past two or three years of wandering through various worlds, Zhuang Hong had discovered that not every world recognized only gold. Some worlds recognized fists—the bigger your fist, the more you could obtain.
But as long as there was a good social order, gold was usually useful, and extremely valuable.
Golden light could always make people's eyes glitter like gold, always stir their vitality and passion.
After Wu Miaomiao indulged herself for a while, she took Zhuang Hong to sell one hundred taels of gold. Then they found a doctor and, as promised, slipped him five hundred thousand Ji Ling Coins.
Thus, everything that followed went very smoothly.
However, they would still have to wait over half a month to receive the two injections that could precisely eliminate cancer cells.
Once everything was settled, Zhuang Hong and Wu Miaomiao left the hospital and finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"Thank you, Miaomiao."
Wu Miaomiao laughed heartily, stood on tiptoe, and patted Zhuang Hong on the shoulder. "We're bros—why talk about thanks or no thanks?"
Zhuang Hong rummaged through his backpack, about to take out a gold bar as a token of thanks for Wu Miaomiao, when she jumped up to stop him and dragged him away at a run.
"Wait, there are too many people here, too many eyes. It's not safe. Let's change to somewhere more secluded. You can give me however much you want there!"
After returning to Wu Miaomiao's home, Zhuang Hong took out a gold bar and handed it to her beneath her expectant gaze.
Wu Miaomiao's eyes shone, but she still refused. "No, no, I was joking."
Zhuang Hong said, "Consider it a little gift from me. Keep it as a collectible."
Wu Miaomiao immediately snatched it up at lightning speed, instinctively put it in her mouth and bit it, then could not help leaping onto the table again to dance like a crazed demon and laugh loudly. Before long, she had turned the house into a complete mess.
"From now on, this will be my family heirloom! Ahahaha!"
Zhuang Hong said, "Miaomiao, I'll be leaving for a while. I'll have to trouble you to keep an eye on the hospital's progress again."
Wu Miaomiao smoothed down her messy hair, jumped off the sofa, and lowered her voice mysteriously, her eyes having turned the color of gold bars. "Are you going to rob gold again? Let me join you—I'm very capable."
Zhuang Hong's mouth twitched. "I told you, I'm not someone who breaks the law."
Not long after Zhuang Hong left Ji Ling Star, within a hidden, massive underground monitoring base somewhere on Ji Ling Star—
A mustachioed man flipped through the Intelligent System's records of detected anomalies.
Among them was: "Two consecutive large, undocumented gold transactions detected in Sha Ting City. Suspected money laundering by an illegal organization. Targets 'Wu Miaomiao,' 'Zhuang Hong,' and 'Bao Cai Jewelry Co., Ltd.' have been identified. Awaiting further investigation."
But amid countless abnormal transactions, such information was unremarkable. The man merely categorized it and reported it upward according to procedure.
Before long, an astonished male voice came from another office. "Uh... is there something wrong with the All-Seeing Eye? Boss, come take a look. The All-Seeing Eye seems to have developed a slight anomaly."
