There were simply too many giant wolves. Though the girl wounded them, she could hardly avoid being wounded herself. The moment she let her guard slip, their sharp claws raked five deep gashes across her arm. Blood gushed from the wounds, turning half her white sleeve red in an instant. Pain made her let out a soft groan, and her movements slowed. In that brief lull, five more giant wolves leaped at her all at once.
Though the girl gritted her teeth and swung her long sword, driving the five wolves back once more, several long, bloody gashes appeared on her arm and back. Wounded again and again, she staggered, nearly falling to the ground. The wolves wouldn't let such a rare opportunity slip by. Five more lunged at once. The girl didn't hesitate; she endured the searing pain and swung her sword again, severing one wolf's paw and slicing another across the throat, gravely wounding both in an instant. But she no longer had the strength to deal with the other three.
One wolf raked the hand holding her sword, leaving several deep gashes that exposed the bone and knocking the sword from her grasp. Another left several deep, bloody gashes on her arm. The last wolf was already lunging to bite her head with its gaping jaws.
Without her sword and wounded repeatedly, how could the bare-handed girl possibly fight off three vicious wolves? She had no strength left to dodge and could only watch helplessly as those gaping jaws drew closer and closer to her head.
Just as the girl was about to perish in the jaws of the giant wolf, Chu Xiaotian finally snapped out of his daze. He had been standing at the edge of the clearing, stunned and slow to react. Without the slightest hesitation, he hurled the wooden club in his hand like a javelin. A girl wielding a sword, fighting dozens of vicious wolves alone and killing several of them—that was the sort of scene he'd only ever seen in the martial arts movies he used to watch. He'd never imagined he would see one here. If he'd only suspected it before, Chu Xiaotian could now be certain: this was definitely not the world he had lived in before. That was why he had been so slow to react. Only when the girl was about to die did he suddenly come to his senses and fling his "weapon" without a moment's hesitation.
Chu Xiaotian had never studied martial arts, nor did he possess any peerless divine techniques. But after turning into a zombie at night and devouring the vital blood of so many living creatures, his strength had grown to a level he could scarcely believe. He could now lift boulders weighing two or three hundred pounds with ease, then hurl them like balls.
The wooden club was as thick as a bowl and certainly no lightweight, but when he threw it, it shot forward like a sharp arrow, tearing through the air with a shrill whistle as it sped toward the vicious wolf lunging at the girl.
Bang! Just as the giant wolf's gaping jaws came within three inches of the girl's head, Chu Xiaotian's club struck it.
The giant wolf was more than three meters long and weighed four or five hundred pounds. The club's impact gave it time for only a single howl of pain before sending it flying sideways. It landed a meter away, its hind legs twitching twice before going still. That blow from Chu Xiaotian had turned everything inside its skull to mush. It was dead beyond any doubt.
Awoo! Chu Xiaotian's move drew the attention of a giant wolf not far in front of him. The beast let out a furious roar, wheeled around, and pounced at him.
Chu Xiaotian panicked a little. He had killed plenty of beasts like this at night, but this was his first time facing one head-on. Still, he quickly steadied himself, darting aside to avoid the wolf's frontal charge. Then, at the last possible instant, he grabbed its hind leg, swung it around, and slammed it into the ground.
The several-hundred-pound giant wolf was as easy as a scarecrow in Chu Xiaotian's hands. He smashed it against the ground, splattering its brains. But he didn't let go of the dead wolf. Instead, he used its corpse as a weapon and swung it at the wolves ahead. With a giant wolf's body in his hands, no vicious wolf could stand in his way. He wielded the corpse and carved a bloody path toward the girl.
The pack charged at him from every direction, but before they could get close, the wolf corpse in his hands smashed them flying. In just over a dozen breaths, he had battered aside every wolf blocking his path and reached the girl.
"Beautiful, are you all right?" After smashing one wolf away with the corpse, Chu Xiaotian turned to the girl and asked with concern. Only when he stood in front of her did he get a clear look at her face. At first glance, his heart fluttered. She was breathtakingly beautiful, with skin as white as jade, a delicate nose, and a pair of bright, limpid eyes filled with surprise and alarm as they fixed on Chu Xiaotian, who looked like a wild man. Her long eyelashes trembled faintly, and her brows were delicately furrowed, making her all the more endearing. For someone like Chu Xiaotian, who had never even held a girl's hand, it was already impressive that he wasn't drooling at the sight. Still, his mind couldn't help wandering. Before the girl could answer, several more giant wolves pounced at them.
"Beautiful, hang on a little longer. I'll beat these guys first!" Chu Xiaotian glanced at the girl and gave her what he considered his kindest smile before speaking softly. As soon as he finished, he hurled the wolf corpse at a giant wolf, then picked up the wooden club he had dropped nearby and brought it down on another.
A wooden club was far more nimble than a wolf corpse. Wielding this "weapon," Chu Xiaotian swept through the battlefield, knocking away every giant wolf that came near. But even one's two fists could hardly fend off four hands, and there were simply too many wolves. Though he fought with such valor in front of the beauty, beset by the pack and forced to protect her, he gradually began to suffer injuries of his own.
Every time he smashed a giant wolf away, several bloody scratches appeared on his body. Fortunately, as a half-human, half-zombie creature, his body could endure far more than an ordinary person's. These wounds didn't affect him much; they only hurt a little. He fought on with invincible valor, beating dozens of giant wolves until they howled in pain. At last, after roughly half an hour of grueling battle, Chu Xiaotian killed every last one.
By then, he was covered in wounds. His grass-cloth outfit had fared even worse, torn to shreds under the wolves' claws and reduced to grass scraps scattered everywhere. Fortunately, he still had a pair of underpants on. Otherwise, he really would have lost face.
"Thank you, young master, for saving my life. I'm deeply grateful. Here, these are some pills to heal your wounds. Please take them quickly." Chu Xiaotian had just killed all the giant wolves and was still panting heavily with excitement when a clear, melodious voice like an oriole's song rang out behind him. The voice was sweet and smooth, like a breeze brushing his face, and it made his heart flutter all over again.
He immediately turned around and saw the girl standing behind him, her face full of gratitude. Two red pills rested quietly in her hand. Each was about the size of a little finger, and both gave off a faint red glow that was pleasing to the eye.
"Pills? These are really pills?" Chu Xiaotian stared at the two red pills in the girl's hand, his face full of astonishment, and asked in disbelief. He had always thought pills like these existed only in immortal-hero novels and movies. He'd never expected to see one of these legendary things in this place. For a moment, he felt as though he were dreaming.
"Of course they're pills. I made these Recovery Pills myself. They're only first-grade pills, but they work very well on external injuries. Look, my wounds have almost healed." Seeing Chu Xiaotian's dazed expression, the girl gave a soft giggle and spoke sweetly. However, the sight of his nearly bare body made her pretty face blush faintly.
Looking at the smiling girl, Chu Xiaotian felt as if the whole world had brightened. His heart howled: So this is what it means to be beautiful enough to topple a kingdom! He gazed at her face for quite a while, until she blushed under his stare, then reluctantly shifted his gaze to the arm she held out before him. The bloody gashes the giant wolves had left there had stopped bleeding. They hadn't scabbed over yet, but they had already healed quite a bit. At this rate, the wounds that Chu Xiaotian thought would take at least ten days to heal would be completely recovered in fewer than three.
"Beautiful, my name is Chu Xiaotian. May I ask your name? And where are we?" Seeing how well the pills worked, Chu Xiaotian shamelessly took the two red pills from her hand and swallowed them in one go. Then he looked at the girl and asked.
