Background / History
Precht, Fairy Tail’s previous master, entrusted the guild to Makarov when he was young. Makarov remembered Precht’s confidence in him and his teachings that a guild should be a home for its members 294 295.
As master, Makarov oversees Fairy Tail’s requests and S-Class examinations. He initially discourages the newly joined Lu Chongwei from taking a dangerous Gidoken request, then permits it on the condition that Gildarts accompany him 15. He later declares Lu the winner of an S-Class promotion exam after Lu’s fight with Makarov’s grandson Laxus leaves both competitors exhausted 36.
Makarov’s efforts to protect his members repeatedly bring him into conflict with the Magic Council. After Lu and Mirajane destroy Eiffel City while completing a demon-subjugation request, he writes a 100,000-word apology to secure their release—only to find them staying in a Council VIP suite at considerable expense 67 68.
During Fairy Tail’s conflict with Phantom Lord, Makarov initially favors caution. After Levy, Jet, and Droy are found badly beaten, he accepts Lu’s criticism and declares war. Aria subsequently drains his magic power; Mystogan recovers it, and Makarov returns as the guild celebrates victory 115 120 128 132 134.
On Tenrou Island, Makarov confronts Precht, now calling himself Hades and leading Grimoire Heart. Hades overwhelms and seriously injures him, but Lu intervenes. After Hades’s defeat, Makarov announces Fairy Tail’s victory across the island and refuses to kill his former teacher 294 295 327 328. When Acnologia attacks, Makarov tries to hold the dragon back so his guild members can survive 339 340.
Makarov later proposes retiring and nominating Lu as Fairy Tail’s sixth master. Lu refuses the administrative role, and Makarov appoints Macao acting guild master instead 352.

He accepts Mystogan despite his concealed face and uncertain origins, and he is relieved to learn that the long-missing Race is alive even though Race chooses not to return 61 388.
He is also openly emotional: he scolds Lu for disappearing for four months, breaks down at the prospect of postwar rebuilding costs, and weeps when his members return after seven years 29 135 387. His affection for Precht does not prevent him from opposing Grimoire Heart, but it does influence his decision to spare him 294 328.
