Background & History

Madara grew up as Tajima Uchiha's eldest son alongside his younger brothers, Mingye and Izuna. His exceptional talent, maturity, combat experience, and status as heir led the clan to protect him from especially dangerous assignments so he could develop into its next pillar. 1 16

As a youth, he formed a secret friendship and rivalry with Senju Hashirama. Their repeated stone-skipping contests and sparring matches established a bond based on competition, though Madara's willingness to use hidden stones and improvised tactics often turned apparent losses into draws. 11 18 20 Tajima's intervention ultimately shattered the friendship, placing Madara back on the Uchiha side of the clan conflict. 20

Following Tajima's death, Madara inherited leadership of the Uchiha Clan. He pursued an expansionist policy of absorbing other clans, despite arguments with Mingye and Izuna over the costs of forceful rule. 20 22 During this period, he awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan and began using Susanoo as the clan's foremost military power. 21 38

Madara, Mingye, and Izuna used the Kurohabaki Clan as bait to draw out the Senju. Madara fought Senju Butsuma and Hashirama during the resulting battle, ultimately helping his brothers kill Butsuma while Hashirama escaped with a small number of survivors. 41 43 45

After consolidating the Uchiha Clan's position, Madara selected the site for its village and ordered Izuna to begin its construction. He later named the settlement Konoha, presenting it as a symbol of hope and justice amid the era's chaos. 46 47 59

Years later, Madara sought answers concerning chakra, the Sage of Six Paths, and the limits of his own ocular power. He encountered a mysterious entity at the Sage's temple, then received Black Zetsu's guidance that merging Yin and Yang Release through the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and Hashirama's genes could evolve his Sharingan further. 100 124

Madara eventually fought Hashirama again alongside the Nine-Tails. Increasingly consumed by resentment, he countered Hashirama's Sage Art with Tengai Shinsei and used Limbo: Border Jail during their battle. 146 Black Zetsu later revived him and restored some of his vitality through the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, after which Madara learned of Mingye's death and pursued a means of restoring himself through the Rinnegan. 150 In his later years, he focused on finding a successor. 215

Appearance

When Black Zetsu encounters him after his prolonged decline, Madara is severely aged: his body trembles, his face is deeply wrinkled, and he appears physically frail. Despite his pride and aggression, Madara initially struggles with the contradiction between his desire for peace and Tajima's violent orders. As clan head, he comes to believe that visible achievement and overwhelming strength are necessary to preserve the clan's confidence in him. 6 22
