Background / History
Jiraiya trains in isolation outside Konoha, carrying boulders several times his own size across the cliffs near Hokage Rock. He works to prove himself to others and to himself, while openly declaring that he will one day have his face carved among the Hokage. 166
He spends a decade cultivating Sage Arts at Mount Myōboku. The Great Toad Sage gives him a prophecy: he will lay the foundation for a coming revolution, and one of his disciples will become an existence capable of changing the world. 172
Although he is carefree and dismissive of status, Jiraiya protects Konoha through decades of conflict. His disciples—Yahiko, Nagato, Konan, Minato Namikaze, and Naruto—are described as sharing his legacy and glory. 167
Mingye encourages Jiraiya to find a successor, leading him to notice Minato Namikaze at the Ninja Academy. Jiraiya later becomes Minato's teacher, presenting himself with his usual theatrical confidence. 189 191
During the wars, Jiraiya clashes repeatedly with Mingye, first while Mingye conceals his identity and later in large-scale Sage Method battles. He survives a dangerous berserk transformation only because Fukasaku uses Reverse Summoning to withdraw him to Mount Myōboku. 182 239 240
After learning of Wu's death, Jiraiya returns to Konoha in grief and fury, attacks Root's headquarters, and publicly accuses Shimura Danzō. Unable to obtain justice, he leaves Konoha with Tsunade. 243 244
He later returns to protect Kakashi, confronts Akatsuki while tracking Orochimaru, and forces Deidara, Sasori, Kisame, and Itachi to retreat. 239 309 310 He eventually begins training Naruto in chakra control, the Rasengan, Wind Release, and Multiple Shadow Clone training. 338 339
Appearance
Jiraiya is a white-haired shinobi whose appearance becomes far more striking when he uses Sage Method.
- Long white hair, used as both armor and a weapon. 239 310
- Sage Mode changes his hair to deep crimson and gives him white-and-red facial markings. 239
- Wears a white ceremonial robe with red diamond-patterned trim and a black collar on formal occasions. 244
- His unusually long hair and exaggerated poses are frequently associated with his flamboyant reputation. 239 309
Personality
Jiraiya is confident, carefree, irreverent, and prone to theatrical self-praise. He mocks danger, gives himself extravagant titles, and openly resists being tied down by political responsibility. 166 254 309
Behind that behavior, he is deeply compassionate and protective. He silently bears his own hardships, leaves his smiles for others, and feels responsible for the people he teaches and protects. 167 His strongest convictions concern loyalty, dreams, and the dignity of the dead; when Wu dies, those values drive him into a reckless confrontation with Danzō. 243 244
In battle, Jiraiya can become frighteningly ruthless. His “Mad Demon” state strips away his usual attachments and leaves him focused only on the thrill and danger of combat. 240
