Mister Mxyzptlk ran off crying again, his self-esteem dealt a crushing blow. Joker no longer even had any interest in killing him; he looked at him as though he were a worn-out shoe...
That was the greatest humiliation.
But Mister Mxyzptlk did not realize that Joker spared him not only because he could not be bothered to kill him, but also because he was wary of the Fifth Dimension.
Robbing Mister Mxyzptlk and killing Mister Mxyzptlk were fundamentally two different concepts!
If Mister Mxyzptlk were killed by Joker, the entire Fifth Dimension would never stand by and watch as it did now. They would riot as one and do whatever it took to kill Joker and avenge Mister Mxyzptlk!
The Fifth Dimension had very few residents to begin with, and now they were supposed to lose Mister Mxyzptlk, one of its key inhabitants? Setting emotions aside, Mister Mxyzptlk was the Fifth Dimension's designated scapegoat. The Fifth Dimensional King had been hoping to use that restless troublemaker to indirectly probe the state of the multiverse.
If Mister Mxyzptlk died, who would serve as that scapegoat who never learned his lesson?
That was also where Joker was smartest. He knew exactly what his target was and had always kept his attention on Batman. As for beings he could not afford to provoke, he avoided them whenever possible.
If Mister Mxyzptlk had been a vicious and ruthless figure, Joker would have run as far away as he could. He would never have approached him to swindle him.
That had been the case in Gotham back then. Many of Joker's schemes had avoided people like Donnie, because Joker knew that if Donnie ever got the chance, he would kill him without hesitation!
No one would be able to stop him!
