Entanglement

For the next two days, no one in the Fourth Squad rested.

Zhou Bin and Sun Jing went over all the confiscated physical evidence again and again, hoping to find Wang Haidong's fingerprints on the packaging of those materials, or some other trace that could directly link him to them.

But the results were disappointing. The only fingerprints on all the packaging belonged to Zhang Yuhuai and the warehouse manager. There was not a trace of Wang Haidong.

Fang Xiaoxiao and Li Zhaowen threw themselves into the electronic evidence. They turned the data on Zhang Yuhuai's personal terminal upside down, trying to find direct proof that Wang Haidong had participated in the smuggling—even a single sentence would do.

But Zhang Yuhuai was clearly an experienced white glove. Everything involving Wang Haidong was written in code names and veiled language. Even if it were brought before a court, it would not constitute valid evidence.

Chen Yunxuan was responsible for watching the interrogation room surveillance footage, replaying every word and every expression from Wang Haidong and Zhang Yuhuai over and over, hoping to find a crack in their defenses.

But Wang Haidong maintained that innocent expression from beginning to end, his words watertight. Zhang Yuhuai, meanwhile, was like a dead man who had already resigned himself to his fate. Aside from admitting guilt, he refused to say another word.

On the afternoon of the second day, the five members of the Fourth Squad sat around a round table in their office area, all wearing grim expressions.

Li Zhaowen adjusted his glasses, his voice low. "Legally speaking, the chain of evidence only leads to Zhang Yuhuai. As the company's legal representative, Wang Haidong can at most be held responsible for inadequate supervision. He'll pay a fine, and that'll be the end of it."
