Queen Mary nodded at once. "Indeed, as you say. Then... how should we respond?"
Baron de Breteuil stepped forward from the side and bowed. "Your Majesty, if you are concerned about the stability of the political situation, perhaps we could follow the precedent from the time of His Majesty Charles VI. His Majesty the King could appoint His Highness the Crown Prince as Regent, to oversee the affairs of state in his stead."
Duke of Levis's own status was not sufficient for him to take part in a matter as momentous as establishing a regency, so the Imperial Chancellor had to be the one to put it forward. When he had heard from his wife last month that Her Majesty the Queen intended to make the Crown Prince Regent, he had been unable to confirm whether it was true, but he had already begun making the necessary preparations.
It was not until he heard that very morning that His Majesty the King was gravely ill and needed to go to Brittany for treatment that he suddenly realized this must have been Her Majesty the Queen's arrangement—but it contained a massive loophole.
So he had immediately gone to find Baron de Breteuil and, through him, summoned doctors from the Medical and Health Bureau to provide the Queen with a safety net.
A gleam flashed through Queen Mary's eyes. She had not expected the tide to turn so quickly. It was practically God watching over her!
She hurriedly put on a worried expression again. "Your proposal is most appropriate. Oh, my thoughts are in such turmoil right now. Please convene a meeting of the Senate and draft a Regency Charter as soon as possible."
Seeing her agree so readily, Baron de Breteuil could not help exchanging a glance with Duke of Levis.
