Queen Mary stared in surprise as the two motorcades not far away tangled together.
In an instant, carriages tilted askew, horses neighed, and the police and the Papal Guard shoved at one another, shouting orders for the other side to withdraw at once. The scene looked like a cheap vegetable market where vendors were fighting over stalls.
She looked toward the Guard Captain. "Why is Archbishop Muzarelli here?"
Behind her, Brienne stepped forward and bowed. "Your Majesty, Archbishop Muzarelli arrived in Paris last week, saying he wished to discuss some church affairs with Archbishop Beaumont. But he and the Pope are somewhat... ah, not very harmonious. Today, he is probably deliberately trying to embarrass the Pope..."
Brienne was carrying out Joseph's instructions.
