Ch. 341Witnessing God's Manifestation!
Chapter Summary
Key plot points and events
- Lilith confronts Fane, arguing that the Strings of Force must not be treated as God. Fane rejects any authority above a Spellcaster’s free will and attacks her with Throne of Will, a sorcery that imposes his will on an opponent. Lilith resists and declares that she still wants to kill him.
- Elsewhere in the tower, Charles uses the Key of Worlds to contain the destruction caused by the fighting. The Church of Time’s leader is weakened by the cost of using the Doomsday Pocket Watch, and Olivia and Augustus combine their powers against the enemy.
- Edwin catches Olivia off guard with a Gravity Field. Charles saves her by transporting her through the tower, but the effort further exhausts him.
- Augustus is exposed as an ally of the True God Church, shocking the Weavers because the Church and the Lorne family were historically bitter enemies. Charles tries to trap the intruders by using the tower’s power.
- Solomon Lorne, the Federation’s Grand Speaker, attacks Charles through a spatial rift. Charles reveals that the tower is a world unto itself, where his control of the Key lets him sense spatial sorcery—but Solomon is already inside.
- Augustus reveals God’s Will, a seemingly divine spark that momentarily overwhelms those present. Solomon uses the distraction to sever Charles’s arm and seize the Key of Worlds. He then escapes with Lilith and the others, drawing the remaining Weavers out of the tower.
- Lilith explains that a powerful devil among the Otherworldly Demons threatens to destroy Vysseran. She believes God must descend to defeat it, using the tower as a vessel. The assembled Weavers oppose this plan, unwilling to place a deity above Spellcaster civilization.
- Solomon and Lilith proceed regardless. They summon two Church envoys, offer the Key of Worlds and the tower, and begin the ritual. The tower dissolves into a vast tide of energy, from which a radiant divine figure emerges.
- Lilith celebrates God’s manifestation, but Solomon ends the chapter by declaring that they will also witness God’s fall.
Character developments and interactions
- Fane and Lilith: Their past closeness has given way to ideological conflict and hostility. Fane claims to defend Spellcasters’ freedom, yet uses mind-controlling sorcery against Lilith; she condemns his hypocrisy.
- Charles: He demonstrates formidable control over the tower and protects Olivia, but his efforts leave him drained. Solomon’s attack costs him a hand and the Key of Worlds.
- Olivia and Augustus: They fight in coordination, combining Light, Thunder, and Fire sorcery before Edwin disrupts their attack. Augustus’s alliance with the Church and possession of God’s Will reveal a hidden allegiance.
- Solomon and Lilith: The former enemies now stand together, leading a plan that reaches into the Federation’s highest levels. Lilith’s faith in God’s descent contrasts with Solomon’s apparent intention to bring about God’s destruction.
- The Weavers: Their immediate conflicts are overtaken by the threat of the ritual and by the revelation that old political enemies have united.
Significant themes
- Free will versus divine authority: Fane rejects a God who could rule over Spellcasters, while Lilith sees divine power as necessary for survival.
- Faith, power, and control: The tower, the Key of Worlds, and God’s Will are all instruments through which characters seek to direct overwhelming forces.
- Betrayal and shifting alliances: The Lorne family and the True God Church, once mortal enemies, cooperate in a secret plan.
- Civilization’s survival and its cost: Lilith frames the ritual as humanity’s defense against an existential threat, while the tower’s destruction and the Weavers’ resistance suggest that salvation may demand—or conceal—catastrophic consequences.
