Ch. 41Flying Yaksha (6k)

Chapter Summary: “Flying Yaksha”

Key plot points and events

  • Hong Yuan secretly boards a cargo ship by leaping from the river, continuing his journey toward Linjiang Prefectural City.
  • In the preceding days, he has defeated more than ten notable fighters. He kills those known for serious wrongdoing but otherwise uses fights to learn techniques, gather medicinal formulas, and hear martial-world stories.
  • His combat experience and medicinal regimen have rapidly improved his comprehension, physical ability, and root bone. He has also refined his Tiger-Subduing Fist and begun developing a precise, penetrating force technique he names Needle-Condensing Force.
  • Passengers discuss the growing legend of the Flying Yaksha, unaware that Hong Yuan is listening overhead. They also recount the Huang Mansion massacre and the black-robed swordsman’s exploits.
  • River bandits led by One-Eyed Owl attack the ship. A second leader, Skinny Monkey, arrives with reinforcements, leaving the vessel badly outnumbered.
  • Hong Yuan intervenes to prevent the ship’s crew from suffering heavy casualties. He kills bandits with arrows, including One-Eyed Owl, then pursues Skinny Monkey across the bandits’ small boats and kills him with a devastating kick.
  • Afterward, the system reports another small increase in Hong Yuan’s root bone. He leaves before the ship’s owner can meet him.

Character developments

  • Hong Yuan grows more confident in his exceptional strength, recognizing that his body and mind make him far superior to fighters at the same force-technique level. He continues to develop his martial skills through observation and combat.
  • His reputation as the Flying Yaksha is spreading. Others describe him as a formidable, night-roving fighter who challenges renowned martial artists and shows no mercy to notorious criminals.
  • The ship’s owner and crew are impressed by Hong Yuan’s extraordinary abilities, though they do not know his identity for certain.

Character interactions

  • Hong Yuan’s earlier fights with local martial artists have helped shape his techniques and reputation; some defeated fighters have even helped publicize his challenges.
  • On the ship, passengers debate the stories surrounding Hong Yuan and the Flying Yaksha, while he listens unseen.
  • The ship’s owner rallies the crew with rewards for killing the bandits. During the fight, Hong Yuan takes bows from the ship’s archers and orders them to supply him with arrows.
  • After the battle, the owner calls after Hong Yuan, hoping to make his acquaintance, but Hong Yuan departs without speaking to him.

  • Justice and brutality: Hong Yuan distinguishes between ordinary opponents and those he considers evil, killing the latter without hesitation.
  • Power and responsibility: Though Hong Yuan could have waited to make the bandits easier targets, he intervenes early to spare the ship’s people from greater harm.

Ch. 42Life-Taking Throat-Locking Spear

Key plot points and events

  • After a fierce fight, Hong Yuan finds his Root Bone has risen to 6 and his Comprehension to 7. He tests his improved physique by kicking a boulder apart and discovers that his heightened awareness lets him sense minute details within about three zhang, though using it leaves him mentally tired.
  • He runs toward Linjiang Prefectural City, where he intends to kill Wei Zhenzhu, but detours to Black Iron Town to obtain a suitable weapon.
  • In the heavily defended, bustling town, he buys a short blade, rents a private room at the largest restaurant, bathes, changes clothes, and tests his toughness: the blade barely marks his skin, and he can stop a shallow cut with circulating qi and blood.
  • Seeking a master smith, he visits the Hundred Refinement Workshop, jointly run by the Ou and Xu families. When the manager initially refuses his commission, Hong Yuan presses five fingers into a refined-iron saber to prove his strength.
  • The workshop’s head manager, Ou Zhenyun, comes to meet him. Hong Yuan requests a spear and names it the Life-Taking Throat-Locking Spear, asking for paper and a brush so he can explain its design.

Character development and interactions

  • Hong Yuan is exhilarated by his growing abilities. He recognizes that his physical resilience and sensory awareness have advanced, and suspects that every five-point increase in Root Bone or Comprehension marks a minor threshold, with ten potentially bringing a greater transformation.
  • He balances his deadly purpose with a relaxed, self-indulgent side, enjoying a bath, fine food, wine, and the lively town before returning to his mission.
  • Hong Yuan’s dealings with the workshop staff show how his appearance and extraordinary strength command respect. The manager’s skepticism turns to alarm and deference after seeing the iron imprint; Ou Zhenyun greets him warmly, probes his background, and then discusses his weapon request.
  • Hong Yuan presents himself as a wandering martial artist, while Ou Zhenyun suspects he is concealing a prestigious origin. Their courteous exchange establishes mutual interest and respect.

Significant themes

  • Growth and transformation: Hong Yuan’s rising attributes bring concrete physical and mental changes, while he speculates about larger thresholds ahead.
  • Strength and reputation: His feat with the saber instantly changes how the workshop staff treat him, showing how displays of power can open doors.
  • Preparation for violence: Hong Yuan’s weapon search is practical preparation for his planned assassination of Wei Zhenzhu.
  • Self-reliance and adaptation: Rather than rely on a conventional weapon or established identity, Hong Yuan draws on techniques he has absorbed and now seeks a custom spear suited to his needs.

Ch. 43Deliberation, Punishment, and Apology!

Key plot points and events

  • Hong Yuan commissions the Hundred Refinement Workshop to forge his Life-Taking Throat-Locking Spear, providing a detailed design. He chooses Cloud Pattern Iron and pays generously—more than the estimated cost—to have it completed in about fifteen days.
  • Ou Zhenyun recognizes Hong Yuan’s exceptional strength and potential, and hopes to build ties with him. After Hong Yuan leaves, a dissolute young Xu-family man learns about the large payment and follows him, planning to rob him with help from his cousin, a patrol captain.
  • The captain immediately rebukes and beats his cousin for targeting someone so powerful and respected. From a rooftop, Hong Yuan intervenes with stones, severely injuring the young man by smashing his teeth and crippling his hand and leg.
  • Ou Zhenyun and Xu-family head Xu Jingren visit Hong Yuan to apologize. Hong Yuan refuses the extra money offered as compensation, insisting the matter is settled and asking only that his spear be forged promptly. Xu Jingren also offers his niece, Xu Qingjing, to attend to him, but Hong Yuan politely declines.

  • Xu Jingren demonstrates responsibility by acknowledging his family’s wrongdoing and offering a substantial apology.
  • The Xu-family young man is exposed as reckless and greedy; his attempt to exploit Hong Yuan leaves him badly injured.

  • He treats the confrontation as a trial of his strength and a step toward gaining the martial prestige and political power he believes he will need to enter the Taisui Blessed Land.

Character developments

He displays not only formidable strength but also tactical awareness: he relies on the attackers’ poor coordination and fragile morale, and recognizes that their numbers would be more dangerous if they acted together.

  • When a surviving soldier demands his name, Hong Yuan identifies himself, then knocks the man down with a stone. He disappears as fires consume Lanyue Garden.
  • Survivors emerge from hiding. Martial artists marvel at Hong Yuan’s strength and debate whether even a master could defeat him. Some quickly turn to looting, sparking further violence amid the chaos.
  • Hong Yuan’s Root Bone rises by one point. The improvement restores his energy and seems to further remake his body.
  • He reaches the woods and reunites with his teacher, Yang Erhu, who is relieved to find him unharmed. Hong Yuan immediately offers to get him out of Linjiang Prefecture.

Ch. 53Immortal Art and True Art!

Plot and events

  • After the massacre at Lanyue Garden, Hong Yuan realizes he cannot simply return to his old life. He has killed several powerful figures—including Wei Zhenzhu, Hua Feiyun, Guo Zhen, and Jin San of the Canal Gang—along with many other people connected to Linjiang’s influential clans and gangs. Their deaths are likely to trigger a major struggle for power.
  • Hong Yuan explains to his master, Yang Erhu, why he chose decisive violence rather than merely displaying his strength: he wanted to protect Yang from Hua Feiyun’s threat and prevent powerful enemies from retaliating later.
  • Yang Erhu accepts that Hong Yuan has surpassed him and takes comfort in knowing the Tiger-Subduing Sect’s legacy will continue. He urges Hong Yuan not to surrender to threats on his account.
  • Yang assesses the dangers ahead. The Wei and Guo families pose threats, but the Canal Gang and the Hua family are more concerning. Hua Feiyun’s elder sister is a prominent member of the Profound Ice Sect, one of Ming Province’s Three Great Sects.
  • Yang reveals that the Three Great Sects possess True Arts, also called Immortal Art—a level of cultivation beyond the mortal martial arts of Form Transformation. The Tiger-Subduing Sect’s ancestral Dragon-Tiger teaching was once a True Art, but it was divided and reduced to ordinary martial arts.
  • The Canal Gang also has a formidable expert at the Subtlety level and will likely retaliate for Jin San’s death. Hong Yuan agrees they should leave, but Yang says he must first pick someone up.

Character developments and interactions

  • Hong Yuan stands by his choice to kill his enemies, viewing hesitation as both dangerous and inconsistent with the strength he has worked to gain. He is alert to the consequences but remains confident and protective of Yang.
  • Yang Erhu shifts from seeing himself as a possible burden to feeling pride in his disciple’s strength and in the sect’s future. Though he faces the danger with a martial hero’s acceptance of death, he gives Hong Yuan serious warnings about the forces arrayed against him.
  • Their conversation is affectionate but candid: Yang offers Hong Yuan freedom from obligation, while Hong Yuan refuses to dismiss the danger and presses to leave promptly.

Significant themes

  • Power and responsibility: Hong Yuan’s strength enables him to protect others, but his actions create far-reaching consequences.
  • Legacy and inheritance: Yang takes comfort in Hong Yuan carrying on the Tiger-Subduing Sect, while the lost Dragon-Tiger teaching represents a diminished inheritance.
  • Escalation and retaliation: Violence may resolve immediate threats but can provoke powerful factions and political upheaval.
  • Limits of mortal strength: The revelation of True Arts introduces a higher realm that may surpass even Hong Yuan’s formidable martial abilities.

Ch. 54On the Eve of the Storm

Hong Yuan traveled to Linjiang Prefectural City to fetch his martial uncle, Yang Jinbao, after the violence at Lanyue Garden. He found Jinbao playing with women at his residence and revealed himself as the man’s senior brother.

Hong Yuan found Yang Jinbao in the Prefectural City and told him that Yang Lie had sent for him after Hong Yuan killed several powerful figures at Lanyue Garden. Yang Jinbao settled his household and fled with Hong Yuan, who left him near the rivers where Yang Lie was waiting before returning to the city.

  • Hong Yuan explained that he had killed Commander Guo Zhen, Hua Feiyun, Wei Zhenzhu, Jin San, and many others at Lanyue Garden, persuading Yang Jinbao that he had to flee.
  • Yang Jinbao distributed money to his household’s women and servants, while Steward Zhang chose to stay and watch over the residence.
  • Yang Jinbao and Hong Yuan left the residence and passed survivors fleeing toward the Prefectural City, including soldiers carrying Guo Zhen’s corpse.
  • Hong Yuan carried Yang Jinbao beyond the city wall and left him near the woods where the Yudai River met the Longji River, telling him Yang Lie was there before returning to the city.

Ch. 56Subtlety-Level Force, Spiral Force Achieved

Hong Yuan demonstrated that he had mastered Spiral Force and weighed his next moves against the powerful families in Linjiang Prefecture. After checking the Guo Residence and settling in a restaurant near Yang Jinbao’s home, he spotted a Guo family party rushing to capture his accomplices and attacked its leader.

  • Hong Yuan used the rain to demonstrate Spiral Force, enduring its backlash with the help of his powerful healing.
  • He reasoned that the Guo Family, the Hua Family, and the Canal Gang would seek revenge, and decided to provoke them without revealing all his strength.
  • Hong Yuan circled the heavily guarded Guo Residence, then went to a restaurant and watched the road to Yang Jinbao’s home.
  • More than twenty armed men led by a young man in silver armor rushed toward Yang Jinbao’s home, calling for the villain’s accomplices to be captured.
  • Hong Yuan recognized the young man as someone from the Guo Family and hurled his wine cup at him.

Ch. 57The Name Hong Yuan

After learning that Hong Yuan was Yang Erhu’s disciple, the Guo Family sent Guo Ju and his men to seize Yang Jinbao. Hong Yuan confronted them in the street, defeated the guards, and spared Guo Ju after cutting off his ear, warning the family not to target others.

  • The Guo and Hua families exchanged information and learned that Hong Yuan was Yang Erhu’s disciple and that Yang Erhu had a younger brother, Yang Jinbao, in the Prefectural City.
  • Guo Ju led Guo Family soldiers to seize Yang Jinbao, furious over Guo Zhen’s and Guo Jun’s deaths.
