Conquer the Entire World
Just as Huang Mingxiao had said, the fundamental purpose of judging evil people was to help good people.
The same was true for Lin Wen. The good karma from judging evil people was only pocket change; the good karma from helping good people was the real bulk of it.
So once the trials were over, Lin Wen immediately struck while the iron was hot, organizing the people to finish the last temporary settlement so that the final fifty thousand homeless people would no longer have to sleep rough and live exposed to the elements.
A temporary residence for fifty thousand people sounded like an enormous project, but before several hundred thousand people, it was no more than pitching tents for a campsite.
The only difficulty lay in organization, arrangement, and allocation.
Lin Wen did not understand any of that.
But it did not matter. Though Lin Wen did not understand a single aperture, he had someone who understood all seven.
The three thousand Imperial soldiers were placed under Fang Dashan's command. Though their numbers were small, they were disciplined elite troops. They had to take the lead and seize the heavy, bitter, exhausting work for themselves.
There were around one hundred and fifty thousand refugees at the site. Excluding the elderly, weak, women, children, sick, and disabled, there were roughly ninety thousand able-bodied young and middle-aged men. Lin Wen spent only thirty-one points of good karma to find quite a few suitable leaders among them, most of whom had voluntarily stepped forward to maintain order during the earlier gatherings.
He then selected another two hundred from among the officials who had passed inspection. The three hundred or so people in total were put in charge of leading those ninety thousand men to work.
Then he brought in Yuan Zhimen, the king of miscellaneous chores and the big fatty, to handle coordination among those three hundred people as well as all kinds of specific odd jobs.
Lei Tiantong, the granite of finance, was responsible for logistics.
Huang Mingxiao, the super laborer, was responsible for overseeing the overall situation, dividing tasks, and allocating work.
As for Lin Wen, King of the Immortal Realm, naturally he had to lead the charge and fight on the front line. Any hardship or obstacle would be smashed to pieces with a single punch.
Under this dual stimulation of spirit and force, more than ninety thousand people erupted with astonishing combined strength. Strength unhindered and properly directed was beyond imagination, and the leading effect of perfect pioneers was even more immeasurable.
Under Lin Wen's leadership, construction of the temporary settlements accelerated enormously. Work that had been expected to take an entire day of hard fighting was completed just as the sun dipped below the horizon.
When Lin Wen drove the final wooden stake into the ground with one hammer blow, the twentieth and twenty-first temporary settlements were declared complete.
Only then were all three hundred thousand disaster victims finally settled, with no one left sleeping in the wilderness.
Cheers rose from every corner of the settlements. An afternoon of labor had brought them no fatigue, only the exhilaration of spent vitality and the excitement of efficient operation.
When Lin Wen announced through a loudspeaker that the work was done and it was time to eat, the fragrant steam of hot food drifted over. Catching that familiar, everyday scent—yet one that seemed incomparably enticing at this moment—many people suddenly burst into tears. Tears and sweat mingled together, forming a stream that washed away darkness and hardship, parting the clouds and mist.
After that terrifying night, after so many days, they could finally smell happiness once more.
The last trace of the sunset vanished from the earth. A few torches had been planted around the temporary settlements. They were not many, but they were far better than the pitch-black darkness that had descended every night before.
Lin Wen ate some coarse rice along with vegetables and radishes. After using the Seven Apertures Exquisite Heart to complete one final round of communication and reassurance, the belated good karma finally all arrived in his account.
This was the first time Lin Wen had directly received good karma from the work of rebuilding homes.
Ninety-one points in total.
It was not much, but that honey-like sensation flowing through him was something no divine nectar or jade dew could compare with. Like a current of heat, it charged left and right through his meridians like true qi. To Lin Wen, it was the most wonderful illusion of touching his dream.
And Lin Wen knew perfectly well that this was only the beginning of a whole series of massive good-karma gains to come.
"Lin Wen—"
A figure lunged out of the darkness and crashed into Lin Wen's arms.
Lin Wen pried him off and saw that it was the pretty boy.
He immediately shoved him away and shifted farther off at the same time.
The pretty boy, Li Yuchen, did not notice Lin Wen's distaste. He said fervently, "So handsome, Wen-jun! You were so cool." He imitated Lin Wen's motion of shooting the criminals on the platform. "Bang!" Since he had no gun, he supplied his own sound effect, then fell down himself. "Ah—"
He climbed back up, seized Lin Wen by the shoulders, and shook him hard. "One shot for a villain so devoid of conscience, one shot so stirring it shakes the soul! That was insanely satisfying! Wen-jun, you are the light of justice! Whenever I used to watch them judge bad guys, it would stink and drag on forever. They had clearly established guilt, and everyone clearly wanted to chop the bastard to death right then and there, yet they still insisted on waiting until autumn. I told my father it should be changed, and he actually scolded me."
"I really want my father to see what the right way looks like now. Wen-jun, heroes truly see alike. As expected of the good brother of Li Yuchen!"
Lin Wen could not be bothered to waste words on him. He directly activated the Seven Apertures Exquisite Heart and went off to study spells himself. After all, there was still a string of important work ahead, all connected to his enormous haul of good karma.
He had to be prepared.
After all, if he had been more meticulous and thrifty earlier, he would not have wasted so much good karma afterward. He would not still be unable to break through the thousand-point barrier now, stuck at 999 points.
Though one point was nothing, it made his half-compulsive self extremely unhappy.
As for what the Seven Apertures Exquisite Heart talked about, Lin Wen did not care in the slightest.
Thus, when Uncle Jie returned after sending out the secret report, he heard two people passionately conversing inside the tent: "Attack the Divine Capital and trample the Imperial headquarters."
"Blow up the State Affairs Hall and kill every consul."
"Bombard the Senate and execute the High Pillars of State."
"Storm Emperor Tower and capture the Great Emperor alive."
Uncle Jie's entire face twisted in awkward disbelief. He turned to the black-clad giant who had been standing guard there all along.
"Have they always talked like this?"
The black-clad giant wore an equally helpless expression and nodded.
"Did you write it down?"
The black-clad giant nodded, then shook his head. "I wrote down a little at the beginning, but later I realized they seemed to be, uh, not speaking seriously, so I..."
Uncle Jie understood his helplessness as well. He had thought there would be some explosive intelligence, only to discover that they were spouting utter nonsense.
That was understandable, really. Setting aside such sensational topics, this flimsy tent had no soundproofing whatsoever, and with people sprawled everywhere, no one with half a brain would discuss secrets here.
Seeing the two of them about to start talking about "conquering the entire world" and "creating a new era," Uncle Jie could only lift the tent flap and go in.
It took him ages to drag out the screeching Li Yuchen. Uncle Jie, famed for being a tough man, now had nothing but exhaustion on his face. Only after politely apologizing to and bidding farewell to District Chief Lin did he drag Li Yuchen away, along with the five hulking men in black.
The moment they left, Huang Mingxiao, who had been blocked outside waiting for ages, immediately rushed in.
"District Chief Lin! The supplies have been completely depleted!"
Huang Mingxiao, that harbinger of doom, opened his mouth and delivered nothing but bad news.
