Background / History

Elder Duan offered the Qi-Combining Cauldron to Lu Li as a loan when Azure Sun Hall disciples intended to harvest his organs. Lu Li used his lungs as collateral; the device replaced them and was installed in his chest, allowing him to escape through its Liberation by Violence state 7 8.

The cauldron also replaced Lu Li's windpipe, changing his voice and greatly extending his breath. Its internal power source is a First-Turn Four-Form Metal Spirit Core, allowing a mortal to operate it, though its spiritual power must be restored through meditation 9 14.

While using it to pan for ore, Lu Li discovered that its gang qi could extend his senses through water, locate mineral deposits, command metal, and separate mixed ores. He turned these functions into a livelihood, then used the artifact to purify materials needed to forge a replacement cauldron himself 13 14 17 18.

Lu Li later learned that the metal spirit core may be a secondhand core once used by his missing sister, Lu Ling. The core appears to retain fragments of her memories or obsessions, causing Lu Li to hear her voice from within the cauldron 21 22.

Under the loan agreement, Lu Li had to forge the Qi-Combining Cauldron personally or suffer fatal backlash. He completed the forging in ten days; the newly forged duplicate vanished when placed beside the implanted cauldron, fulfilling the first loan and enabling him to accept another Puppet Device loan 27 28.

The cauldron converts Lu Li's breath into gang qi, a form of qi capable of commanding metal rather than merely moving air or water 13.

Limitations

• The cauldron's stored spiritual power is finite. As a mortal without an opened dantian, Lu Li cannot directly replenish it and must use Heavenly Cycle meditation 14 30.
• The basic model accumulates impurities internally and must be cleaned regularly 18.
• Its high-output state has excessive suction and can cause Lu Li to inhale loose ore or dust accidentally 17 18.
• The artifact grants exceptional offense and utility, but does not strengthen Lu Li's naturally frail body; he describes himself as a “glass cannon” before acquiring defensive constructs 24.
• Handing control to another person would leave Lu Li vulnerable, since the cauldron functions as his lungs; he repeatedly refuses Elder Duan's requests for control 17 27.

Relationships
