Background / History

Yan Zhen was widowed two years before the story's opening and was left to support her child and mother-in-law. She opened Zhen's Noodle Shop on East Street in Pasture City to make a living. Before Lin Changsheng began working for her, she repeatedly fed him and enlisted his help watching her child. 1

Her mother-in-law was murdered with Green Snake Powder, after which Yan Zhen was falsely accused and imprisoned. The scheme was orchestrated by Ma Zhankui, who intended to coerce her into becoming his concubine. Lin secretly forced Coroner Li Zhen to re-examine the case, leading to her release. 2 3

Although Ma Zhankui claimed credit for securing her release, he continued threatening her. He gave her an ultimatum: marry him as a concubine or keep him company for a month. Before the deadline expired, a masked Lin Changsheng killed Ma Zhankui and destroyed the Green Snake Gang, freeing Yan Zhen from his control. 6 8

Yan Zhen came to regard the unknown masked archer as her benefactor. She later noticed similarities between the hero's methods and Lin's archery and Iron Sand Palm, but could not believe that the seventeen-year-old Lin possessed such overwhelming strength. 12 25 30

When Lin prepared to leave Pasture City for a path of cultivation, Yan Zhen confronted him in tears. She accepted that he could not remain in the city, gave him her support, and took the keys to his home so she could maintain it until his return. 33
