Background / History
Yu Xiaogang noticed Jiang Yu at Notting Junior Soul Master Academy because Jiang Yu worked unusually hard despite possessing Blue Silver Grass and only innate level-two soul power. Considering Jiang Yu an ideal subject for verifying his theories, Yu repeatedly offered to accept him as a registered disciple, withholding formal discipleship because he deemed Jiang’s talent inadequate. He insisted that Blue Silver Grass should follow the control path and claimed that only his guidance could save Jiang’s future. 1
Jiang Yu repeatedly refused and chose an assault-oriented path instead. Yu reacted with anger, declaring Jiang’s life ruined without his theories, then later used Jiang as a negative example while teaching Tang San. 1 2
After Jiang Yu returned with a thousand-year first soul ring—far beyond Yu’s asserted 423-year limit—Yu was stunned but maintained that Jiang would eventually die from backlash. He used this prediction to reinforce Tang San’s faith in his teachings. 5 7
Yu continued guiding Tang San, praising Tang San’s control-type Blue Silver Grass skills as proof of his theory of martial soul core competitiveness. He planned to introduce Tang San to Shrek Academy after several years of cultivation. 21
When Emperor Xue Ye granted Jiang Yu the official title of “Master,” Yu became convinced that Jiang had plagiarized his theories and stolen the title he saw as his own. He traveled to Heaven Dou City to confront Jiang and reclaim what he believed belonged to him. 27 28 31
The confrontation ended disastrously: Jiang broke Yu’s right arm, then crushed his remaining intact arm after Yu invoked his sect and Spirit Hall connections. Yu Tianheng recovered him and brought him to Shrek Academy, where treatment saved only his left arm; his right arm could not be repaired. 32 33 34
Unable to accept that his soul-ring limits were wrong, Yu concluded that Jiang had used forbidden Evil Soul Master methods. With Flender’s support, he arranged to spread this accusation and sought to train Tang San and Yu Tianheng at Shrek Academy to eventually defeat Jiang. 34
Appearance
Yu Xiaogang is a man with a buzz cut and a smug expression when first seen confronting Jiang Yu. 1
- Often presents himself with arrogant confidence when discussing his theories. 1 7
- Wears glasses, which he pushes up while lecturing Tang San. 7
- After Jiang Yu’s attack, his left arm is heavily bandaged and his right sleeve hangs empty. 34
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is intensely proud of his theoretical knowledge and highly protective of the title “Master,” despite the title being self-bestowed and not widely recognized. He treats his theories as the work of his life and reacts with hostility when reality contradicts them. 1 28 33
He is manipulative and self-serving in selecting disciples. His initial interest in Jiang Yu stems from seeing a low-talent Blue Silver Grass user as a useful test case, not from regard for Jiang’s welfare. Conversely, he places great faith in Tang San and uses Tang’s growth to validate his own ideas. 1 2 21
Following his defeat, Yu becomes increasingly obsessive and vindictive. Rather than revise his conclusions, he labels Jiang an Evil Soul Master and seeks to mobilize Spirit Hall against him. 33 34
