"Tim, have you been looking forward to this moment?" The Admiral straightened Duncan's jersey and looked at him expectantly.
Duncan's expression remained blank, but David Robinson could see a flash of light in his eyes.
Duncan slowly nodded. Seeing his response, David Robinson burst into hearty laughter.
"It looks like David really is Tim's best mentor." Popovich was deeply gratified.
At the start of the season, Popovich had still harbored many doubts about how Duncan and David Robinson would mesh.
Would David's offensive space be affected by Duncan?
Could the Admiral tolerate the emergence of another superstar big man?
Could their personalities get along?
Not every pair of superstar big men could form an invincible twin-tower combination. Hakeem Olajuwon and Sampson had been an example of that. It was only after Sampson left the Rockets that Olajuwon became the omnipotent Hakeem Olajuwon.
A team built around two big men had enormous advantages in half-court play inside the paint. Their rebounding and defensive intimidation were both formidable, but their roles could easily overlap!
Elite big men scored heavily around the basket. If Duncan and David Robinson had not both possessed such reliable mid-range jumpers, the two of them would have found it impossible to move in a cramped offensive space!
Moreover, in half-court sets, stars did not get many shots to begin with. Could David Robinson, once the scoring champion, tolerate Duncan taking away his shot attempts?
A team only had so many opportunities to shoot inside the paint. If Duncan took more shots, David Robinson would inevitably take fewer.
And the Admiral's outgoing, cheerful personality was completely different from Duncan's blank, shy nature!
The fact that the two got along so well truly made Popovich feel fortunate.
"Guys, get ready. In the next moment, we'll shock the world." Popovich surveyed
