Ch. 181Myriad Soul Banner
Chapter Summary: “Myriad Soul Banner”
Plot points and events
Bai Yu brings five dragon bones and numerous rare materials to Artifact Refining Peak, asking Elder Zhang Qingshan to use them to refine a Myriad Soul Banner. Zhang initially considers the request wasteful because the banner is normally a low-grade artifact, but agrees out of curiosity. Bai Yu provides hundreds of Blood Demon Grass stalks, Giant-Scale Vajra Wood, and other valuable materials, revealing the immense resources he has accumulated.
Zhang begins the refinement with Li Xunhuan assisting him. The process lasts three days as Zhang repeatedly modifies the formula and requests additional materials, including Star-Eroding Sand, Scarlet Dragon Iron, and Yin Orchid Dew. After Bai Yu adds a drop of vital blood, the furnace produces a terrifying black-and-red banner surrounded by killing intent. Instead of becoming an ordinary artifact, it reaches the level of a high-grade spirit artifact, the peak of its category.
Character developments
Bai Yu demonstrates that he is far wealthier and more ambitious than he appears, sparing no expense to maximize the banner’s potential. His excitement and gratitude show how important the weapon is to his future plans. Zhang Qingshan’s expertise and pride as an artifact refiner are emphasized as he adapts the refinement process and successfully creates an exceptional treasure. Li Xunhuan acts as Zhang’s assistant and is visibly shocked by Bai Yu’s materials and the artifact’s final quality.
Character interactions
Zhang questions Bai Yu’s decision but respects his insistence and waives the refining fee. He instructs Li Xunhuan to observe and assist, though Li must personally provide some additional materials. After the successful refinement, Zhang hands the shrunk banner to Bai Yu and advises him to cultivate it carefully and gather as many souls as possible.
Significant themes
The chapter highlights the value of rare resources, technical mastery, and ambition. It also reinforces the dark, ruthless nature of the Heavenly Demon Sect: the banner’s strength depends on harvested souls, and Zhang openly encourages Bai Yu to scheme, slaughter cities, and collect immense numbers of spirits. The finished banner symbolizes Bai Yu’s growing power and foreshadows increasingly brutal methods of cultivation.
