Once the enemy invaded, it would deal a crushing blow to the Zerg's strength. A civilization's combat power was directly tied to its productivity; the greater its productivity, the stronger the civilization.

And productivity could not exist without material as its medium. There always had to be a place where productivity could be put to use. In human society, such a place was called a factory, while among the Zerg, it was called a hive.

In other words, the number of hive planets was tied to the strength of Zerg civilization. If they were all destroyed by the enemy, the Zerg's productivity would collapse as well.
