Mo Lin sat cross-legged at the edge of the basin, mysterious words flowing from his mouth one after another:
"Nature and heaven and earth, foul qi disperses; within the cavern, the mystery shines bright, the Great Origin... Gan Luo Da Na, cavernous radiance, supreme mystery; slay demons, bind evil, deliver countless ghosts..."
Who knew how many years had passed since Mo Lin had once again recited one of Taoism's "Eight Great Mantras."
The mantra he was chanting was called the Purification of Heaven and Earth Mantra. Simply put, its purpose was to deliver the ghosts that remained in the mortal world because of hatred and grudges, allowing them to enter the cycle of reincarnation.
However, the Purification of Heaven and Earth Mantra could produce entirely different effects depending on the alteration of the word "deliver" in "deliver countless ghosts."
For example, changing it to "pardon countless ghosts" would absolve guilty spirits, cleanse them of their sins, and give them a chance at rebirth.
Changing it to "slay countless ghosts" would completely destroy the ghosts, ensuring they could never be reborn. Yet Heaven valued the preservation of life, so Taoists generally did not use the "slay countless ghosts" version of the Purification of Heaven and Earth Mantra.
Mo Lin continued chanting. A faint white glow actually emanated from his body, while lines of white incantations materialized out of thin air and revolved continuously around him. Their number increased with every recitation of the mantra.
By the time Mo Lin recited it for the tenth time, white incantations filled the entire basin, and the originally dense yin energy gradually melted away under their effects.
