Background / History

Goku and his twin brother, Qi Tian, were brought to Mount Paozu as infants and raised by Grandpa Gohan. During their childhood, Qi Tian trained and protected Goku, while Goku remained innocent, straightforward, and deeply attached to his brother. Goku inherited Grandpa Gohan's Four-Star Dragon Ball. 1

When Bulma arrived seeking the Dragon Balls, Goku joined her and Qi Tian on the journey. He was initially wary of Bulma but quickly embraced the adventure, traveling with the group to Turtle Hermit Island, the wilderness, and Pilaf Castle. 1 4

At Pilaf Castle, exposure to the full moon caused Goku to become a Berserk Great Ape. Unable to distinguish friend from foe, he attacked everyone nearby until Qi Tian subdued him in his own Black-Gold Great Ape form. Goku later awoke with no memory of the rampage; Qi Tian sealed his tail's transformation function to ensure he could never lose control under moonlight again. 6 7

Goku competed in the World Martial Arts Tournament, advancing through the early rounds before facing Master Roshi, who fought under the identity of Jackie Chun. Despite using a full-power Kamehameha, Goku was defeated by Roshi's superior experience and full-power form. He accepted the loss without resentment and vowed to surpass his master. 9 12

During King Piccolo's rampage, Goku wanted to join Qi Tian and Master Roshi in confronting the threat but was ordered to remain behind due to the gap in strength. His admiration for Qi Tian intensified after witnessing the defeat of King Piccolo, and he asked his brother to teach him the Black-Gold Great Ape transformation. 15 17

Goku later trained under Mr. Popo at Kami's Lookout, mastering the foundations of divine-essence circulation and aura control. He returned in time for the next World Martial Arts Tournament, defeated Tien Shinhan, and reached the final against Qi Tian, where he was again defeated but renewed his promise to become stronger. 19 23

Afterward, Goku underwent increasingly harsh training with Krillin and Yamcha under Qi Tian and Master Roshi. He fought Dr. Gero's android forces, Piccolo's demonic clones, and the completed Androids 17 and 18.
